The PGA Championship, one of the four major golf tournaments conducted annually, has its roots in 1894 but was founded in 1916. Originally held in match play, the event was the fourth of the four majors. Stroke play was added to the format in 1958, and it was made the second major in 2019.

At the tournament, Jack Niklaus and Walter Hagen tied for the most victories with five each. With four, Niklaus also owns the record for most runner-up places. The most often repeated course is Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma, which has hosted five events, the most recent of which was in 2022.

2024 PGA Championship Venue

The Valhalla Golf Course, a private golf course in Louisville, Kentucky, will host the 2024 PGA Championship. The club has hosted the PGA Championship in 1996, 2000, and 2014. This will be its fourth time hosting the event. The club has also hosted the Ryder Cup in 2008, as well as the Senior PGA Championships in 2004 and 2011.

The layout, which was created by Jack Nicklaus in the middle of the 1980s, is spread across two different lands: a flood plain situated in Floyd's Fork River bend and a hilly area, and an upland terrain that slopes through hardwoods and former pastureland.

Throughout the first nine holes, there are naturally existing limestones used to strengthen greens, streams, and water features. The end of the three previous PGA Championships held at Valhalla was dramatic on hole 18, a reachable par 5 that required a split fairway second shot.

PGA Championship Locations Year by Year

The courses of the PGA Championships change every year, though the courses often repeat, but not in a consecutive manner. The future events are also scheduled until 2030. New York has hosted thirteen times, with Ohio coming in second with eleven and Pennsylvania third with nine.

The most frequent venue is the Southern Hills Country Club, which hosted five championships in 1970, 1982, 1994, 2007 and 2022. Oak Hill Country Club comes in second with four championships, the latter club has tied with the 2024 venue, Valhalla Golf Club.

The PGA Championship has traditionally been held on the eastern side of the United States, with the 2020 PGA Championship held at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco; the event returned to California after 25 years. Prior to 2020, it was last played in Sahalee, east of Seattle, in the Pacific time zone, in 1998.
