With this 3rd T20I abandoned without toss, England cannot lose the series now. The final match is on Thursday at The Oval but the forecast for that game isn't all that great either. Both teams will want to play as many overs of cricket in that T20I though, as they do not play any warm-up game before the World Cup. We hope for the best and promise to come back to you a couple of days later. We also hope and pray to cover the full match for you! So till then, from the pair of Bidipto and Arya, it's goodbye. Keep following Sportskeeda!
8:15 pm local time, 12:45 am IST: We have news for you friends, but we're afraid it's not the best. In fact, it's the worst. Due to persistent rain, the umpires have decided to call the game off.
Babar Azam, the Pakistan skipper, was not too amused when fans mobbed him in Cardiff. Read on, friends. 👇
8:05 pm local time, 12:35 am IST: We were supposed to have an inspection at 8:10 pm local time (12:40 am IST) but unfortunately, it's drizzling now in Cardiff! What seemed like a glimmer of hope has subsided for the moment.
8:00 pm local time, 12:30 am IST: Rain has eased considerably! Yes friends, rain has seemingly stopped and now, the ground staff are busy doing the mopping up work. We hope to get some play in now. Stay on, we will bring you the next update real soon. There will be ground inspection by the umpires at 8:10 PM local time if there is no further rain.
07:20 PM local time, 11:50 PM IST- It's still raining at the Sophia Gardens and chances of play look bleak with each passing minute. We have around two hours time to the cut-off time for a five-over game. The drainage system in Cardiff is brilliant and we should get a curtailed game in but the rain has to stop. Unfortunately, it's not looking good. The wait continues.
06:55 PM local time, 11:25 PM IST- Nothing new to report from the Sophia Gardens as the drizzle continues. The cut-off time for a five over contest is 1:48 AM IST. We will start losing overs from 11:30 PM IST.
06:25 PM local time, 10:55 PM IST- It has gone very dark at the Sophia Gardens. The rain might have eased up a bit but conditions not looking great. We would start losing overs from 11:30 PM IST. Looks like there is about three hour time for the cut off time for a five over contest. We will keep you updated with the latest developments as and when we get any.
6:00 pm local time, 10:30 pm IST: There is rain about at the moment in Cardiff. The toss has been delayed. But the weather forecast shows improvement, so, we should get a game in. Stay with us, we will keep you posted.
Former Pakistan captain and T20 World Cup winner Shahid Afridi had his say on one certain Azam Khan. But those words were full of criticism for the wicketkeeper-batter and maybe, rightly so. Do click on the link below and read his statement, friends.
Hello everyone! Welcome to Sportskeeda'a live coverage of the 3rd T20I between England and Pakistan! Bringing all the action from Sophia Gardens in Cardiff to you will be the commentary pair of Bidipto and Arya. Before we get started, do give the preview a read. 👇
Amid the uncertainty over the weather in Birmingham on Saturday, England produced an assured display. They first post a 180-plus total, riding on captain Jos Buttler’s exquisite half-century. Then, their bowlers grew into their own as the innings progressed, producing a solid display of death-bowling, backed by earlier inroads by their spinners.
England, thus, head into Cardiff with a 1-0 lead, knowing that another victory will win them the series. And given there is not a lot of time left till the start of the T20 World Cup, they would want to wrap it up early and leave a window for experimentation.
Pakistan, on the other hand, have blown more cold than hot in recent weeks. The T20I on Saturday was indicative of it too. There were promising moments but they were usually followed by something lesser inspiring. The chopping and changing at the top of the order has not helped either.
On Saturday, Mohammad Rizwan and Saim Ayub opened the batting. Neither, though, could really get going. Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman showed signs of sparking Pakistan into life but once they perished, the visitors lost steam.
So, that is one area they would want to rectify more than most. The ability to produce a coherent batting display and not just be reliant on one or two individuals. There will be particular intrigue around how Azam Khan fares too, given his reputation in domestic cricket and franchise T20 leagues.
On the bowling front, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Amir and Shaheen Shah Afridi started as Pakistan’s frontline pacers at Edgbaston. They did a decent job but they will feel they are capable of finding another gear. Imad Wasim, meanwhile, did what he does best: keep things tight and pick up wickets by virtue of that. Pakistan would not mind something similar at Cardiff.
Now, back to England. Firstly, they will have to offset the absence of regular skipper Buttler, who is unavailable for this game. In Phil Salt and Will Jacks, though, England have two excellent deputies. Harry Brook, Liam Livingstone and Moeen Ali – all of whom are capable of turning it on, failed in Edgbaston and might look at this game as an opportunity to thrive, alongside Jonny Bairstow, who might move up a spot in Buttler’s absence.
With the ball, Jofra Archer grabbed the headlines over the weekend. He began expensively but then came back to rock Pakistan. There might be a temptation to rest him, given how close the T20 World Cup is, but England might also want to test out his durability before the big event.
Chris Jordan and his death-bowling could be key, as could be Adil Rashid’s bowling in the middle overs. If the pitch offers turn, Moeen could also come into the game, while Reece Topley will be relied upon to get wickets with the new ball.
Thus, all things considered, England seem favourites heading into this contest. They are playing at home too and have momentum after the win on Saturday. Pakistan, though, will be smarting after that defeat and would want to put out a statement of their own, and that is what makes this encounter fascinating.
England, looking to seal the series; Pakistan, hoping to keep it alive. Expect a cracker!
