About Monaco GP

The Monaco GP strikes fear among several Formula 1 drivers due to its narrow street layout and almost negligible overtaking opportunities. On the other hand, it is one of the fan favorite tracks on the Formula 1 calendar.

The Monaco Grand Prix is an eagerly awaited event which has a lot of historical significance. The streets of Monte Carlo have blessed the audience with one of the best displays of racing and many iconic moments. It is the home race of Ferrari’s “Lord Perceval”, aka Charles Leclerc. Monaco is also the track which famously gave us the lap of the gods, courtesy of the legend, Ayrton Senna.

Monaco Grand Prix and McLaren special liveries seem to have an enthralling connection together. McLaren previously raced with their fan favorite “Gulf Livery” in Monaco and they will be racing yet another special livery in 2024.

McLaren will honor Senna’s legacy and his contributions to Formula 1 with a livery for its cars and drivers’ suits. McLaren will switch from their regular “Papaya” scheme to a green-yellow paint job in Monaco.

The Monaco Grand Prix may be the muse of the audience but for drivers it brings forth unique challenges. The race is one of the slowest on the calendar and drivers need to put every effort they can during qualifying to ensure an advantageous race start.

Monaco Grand Prix History

Monaco had been holding races for a long time even before the origin of Formula 1. The first Formula 1 race in Monaco was organized in 1950. It was conquered by Juan Michael Fangio and was his first win in a world championship race. The race is one of the pillars of the biggest achievement in motorsports, “Triple Crown”.

A driver must win the Monaco GP in order to have a claim at the Triple Crown of motorsports. The race has been riddled with accidents due to the punishing nature of the track and drivers find themselves in a tight spot near the famous “Swimming pool” chicane and the tunnel which precedes it.

A hilarious incident occurred during the race in the 2006 Formula 1 World Championship. Kimi Raikonnen was contesting second place when his car retired due to mechanical failure. He was later seen retiring to his yacht parked in the harbor (going there straight from the circuit), earning himself a spot in the memories of every fan. The 2023 Monaco GP was won by Red Bull’s Max Verstappen starting on pole position.

The lap record of the Monaco GP circuit is held by Lewis Hamilton, who set a time of 1:12.909 in 2021 with his iconic Mercedes W11.
