SummerSlam 2019: 2 things that WWE got right and 2 blunders that they made

SummerSlam had some awesome moments and some disappointing moments
SummerSlam had some awesome moments and some disappointing moments

The anticipation was sky-high from SummerSlam and WWE delivered a stupendous show. A number of titles were defended at The Biggest Party of the Summer. Since several big matches were scheduled for the show, some matches exceeded the expectations of the fans and some bouts failed to deliver.

SummerSlam was held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Though it was the 32nd edition of SummerSlam, Toronto hosted it for the first time. While the Tag Team Titles of the red brand and the blue brand were not defended, the Intercontinental Title wasn't on the line at the Scotiabank Arena.

Except for the Universal Title, all the belts were defended successfully by the respective champions. Trish Stratus, Goldberg and Edge were the legendary names to be part of the show this year.

Let's analyze two things WWE got right at SummerSlam and two things that were blunders:

#2 Blunder: The ending of the WWE Championship match

Kofi Kingston defended the WWE Championship against Randy Orton at SummerSlam. The Viper was certainly the toughest opponent for the New Day member till date and the latter was aware of it. Considering the excellent build-up to the match, the anticipation was high. Kofi Kingston walked out of the Scotiabank Arena with his title but the match had a bizarre ending.

Both Kingston and Orton are exceptional performers, hence, the match was action-packed. While the thirteen-time WWE Champion connected his finisher, RKO, he couldn't capitalize on it. Kingston also came close to pinning The Viper but the champion could not get the job done. Subsequently, both men were outside the ring and they couldn't beat the count out of the referee.

The fans were certainly not pleased by the outcome of the match but Kingston managed to survive another title defense. Judging by the ending of the match, Orton and Kingston will extend the rivalry. The feud has been exciting but the rematch should have a proper outcome.

#2 Got Right: The Fiend's entrance and performance

Bray Wyatt made his long-awaited in-ring return at SummerSlam where he faced Finn Balor. While it was the return of the former WWE Champion, it was also the debut of his new character, The Fiend. The fans were awestruck to see The Fiend in the ring and he delivered a spectacular performance.

The match lasted a couple of minutes as The Fiend earned a dominating victory. While The Fiend tried to deliver a Sister Abigail, Balor countered it, subsequently, he used the Mandible Claw to pick up the victory. Moreover, The Fiend's entrance was the talking point of the match. Similar to his old persona, the new Bray Wyatt had a strange lantern in his hand and the theme song was a remix version of his old entrance music. Bray Wyatt has certainly rejuvenated himself and it will be interesting to see who is the next target of The Fiend.

#1 Blunder: Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns skipping the show

Considering SummerSlam is the second biggest pay-per-view of the year, the top guys of the company are expected to be a part of the event. While some legendary Superstars were part of the show, two big names skipped SummerSlam. Roman Reigns and Drew McIntyre, who are arguably two of the biggest full-time Superstars in the company, weren't present at the Scotiabank Arena.

Prior to SummerSlam, an unknown attacker tried to hurt Reigns, hence, a large number of fans speculated that the attacker could be revealed in Toronto but it didn't happen. Since making his main roster debut seven years ago, the Big Dog missed SummerSlam for the first time. McIntyre, on the other hand, is having a rivalry with Cedric Alexander. The former Cruiserweight Champion defeated the Scottish Psychopath a few weeks ago but the latter never got the opportunity to avenge the loss, hence, SummerSlam could have been the ideal place to take the revenge.

#1 Got Right: The extraordinary main event

When Brock Lesnar and Seth Rollins met at WrestleMania 35, the Universal Championship match opened the main show, however, the scenario was different at SummerSlam. The most coveted prize of the red brand was defended in the main event of the show. It was certainly the best match of the show as we witnessed a gigantic upset.

Brock Lesnar won the Universal Title at Extreme Rules where he cashed in the Money in the Bank contract. Although Rollins defeated Lesnar at The Grandest Stage of Them All, he wasn't the favorite this time. In the last two weeks, Rollins was brutally assaulted by Lesnar and the latter was an easy pick for the SummerSlam bout. Furthermore, Rollins fought with a kayfabe injury.

In my humble opinion, it was one of the best Universal Championship matches since the inception of the belt. It was a fast-paced match with some awesome maneuvers. The Beastslayer countered two German Suplexes. Despite eating some vicious Suplexes and F-5s, Rollins didn't back down and he looked motivated to become a two-time Universal Champion. Rollins delivered multiple Stomps to slay the Beast.
