WWE News: Sasha Banks believes women will eventually main event Wrestlemania

Women’s wrestling has seen a significant boom in the last 3 years. A large part of this is NXT, where Triple H hired Sara Amato to work directly with the women, and also gave them the same platform as the men did.

On the main roster, women were given 2 minute matches, or 5 minute matches, while in NXT they would easily get 15 or so. They were given the freedom to develop as wrestlers, and were viewed on the same level as the men were. That isn’t to say that women’s wrestling started only from the NXT days.

While women’s wrestling itself was held back severley during the Fabulous Moolah’s tenure due to her heavy politicking and exploitation, there were pioneers such as Alundra Blayze, Luna Vachon, Chyna,etc. who paved way for women such as Lita, Trish Stratus, Ivory, Molly Holly, Victoria,etc.

The Attitude Era crop of women was undoubtedly full of talent, but were simply not presented with nearly as many opportunities as the men were. Even during the Divas era, it was quite a step back, despite being PG.

Very, very few women stood out during this period of time, with the exceptions being Natalya, Beth Phoenix and AJ Lee.In fact, the “One step forward-Two steps back” policy has been acknowledged in WWE’s latest documentary WWE 24: Women’s Evolution, that documented the progress made in the division.

While the women of the current and past roster were focused on, none were more focused on than Charlotte, Sasha Banks and Becky Lynch, who had a historic, critically acclaimed Triple Threat match at Wrestlemania 32 for the WWE Women’s Championship introduced that night.

Charlotte won the bout to become the inaugral WWE Women’s champion. There could be several examples of matches that really put women’s wrestling on the map. But ultimately as the WWE 24 documentary proved, it was a collective effort of all the women and others in the WWE team that helped make what it was today.

Now, the next step is for women to main event a pay-per-view on the main roster. That was already achieved in NXT Takeover: Respect last year, however.Jonathan Coachman of ESPN had a short interview with Sasha Banks a couple of days back, where he asked her if the women are ready to main event big shows such as Summerslam or Wrestlemania.

Sasha said “We are not Divas anymore. We are Superstars. We are equal. We are proving every single week that we can do it better than the guys and I prove it every time I go out there.

My biggest dream is to main event a WrestleMania and I guarantee you that is going to happen.”
