5 WWE pay-per-view main events that put the fans to sleep

When the WWE incorporated the concept of pay per views into their programming, everything changed.

No longer would fans have to be in the right place at the right time to see high profile matches, now they could (for a nominal fee) watch the biggest stars of their era face off for prizes, whether that be championship gold, title opportunities or just simple bragging rights.

And for a select group of Superstars, they have been able to main event pay per views, etching their name in the history books, whether they won or came up short.

But not all pay per view main events are created equal, and there have been some shows which failed to get the fans excited, for one reason or another.

Here are five WWE pay per view main events that put the fans to sleep.

#5 The Undertaker Vs. Triple H (King of the Ring 2002)

A heel Undertaker and face Triple H had one of WWE's dullest matches ever.
A heel Undertaker and face Triple H had one of WWE's dullest matches ever.

As two of the biggest stars of their time, you would have thought that The Undertaker and Triple H would work great together.

But when they met at the final King of the Ring pay per view, something was off between the two.

Despite having great matches before, and since, the two legends just could not mesh in the main event, for the Deadman's Undisputed Championship.

The bafflingly slow match features both men taking their sweet time, and whilst this could be effective to build story, the match seemed to move at a glacial pace.

Whilst fans have criticised the pair's matches in 2018, especially their tag match at Crown Jewel, just remember that it was a hell lot worse in 2002.

#4 RVD Vs. Test Vs. CM Punk Vs. Hardcore Holly Vs. Bobby Lashley Vs. Big Show (December to Dismember 2006)

The only ECW exclusive pay per view (despite featuring Superstars from RAW and SmackDown), December to Dismember is not remembered fondly.

After a bizarre show, which had seen ECW original Sabu written out of the main event, the only potential saving grace was the Extreme Elimination Chamber.

Despite this being one of WWE's most barbaric matches, the company had already lost the fans at this point, with things made worse by having mid-carders such as Test and Hardcore Holly in the demonic structure.

The icing on the cake: having Bobby Lashley win the match, and the ECW Championship, the sole focus of Vince McMahon., with the boss being very clear, according to Hardcore Holly's book:

Get this through your thick f*****g head—my focus is on Bobby Lashley and only Bobby Lashley! That man is the brand's icon, the brand's superhero. He is ECW and he will be, at the expense of Rob Van Dam, CM Punk, Test, and everyone else, and you can hit the door if don't like it!”

#3 Triple H Vs. Randy Orton (WrestleMania 25)

These two battled in front of an already exhausted audience.

Despite being a part of some of the company's best matches in recent history, this is sadly not the Game's only appearance on this list.

Meeting his former protege and fierce nemesis Randy Orton in the main event of WrestleMania, the match was fine, as the pair worked well together, with the Game retaining his WWE Championship.

Unfortunately, this match came not long after the incredible bout between Shawn Michaels and The Undertaker, which rightly won the 2009 Slammy for Match of the Year.

Following up from this epic war, the Game and the Viper had no chance, and whilst their match was fine, fans grew bored during it, exhausted from the matches earlier that night.

Fortunately, WWE would learn from their mistake, and the next year, put the Michaels-Taker rematch on last.

#2 The Undertaker Vs. The Dudley Boyz (Great American Bash 2004)

Bearer watches in horror as he is 'buried' in cement.
Bearer watches in horror as he is 'buried' in cement.

This match may have been as boring as heck, but the WWE certainly tried to make it exciting, by teasing the potential of murder on WWE TV.

Returning at WrestleMania 20, the Deadman had been dominant, until coming across Paul Heyman and the Dudleyz, who had kidnapped the Phenom's long-suffering manager Paul Bearer.

Meeting in the first Concrete Crypt match, the rules were baffling, as Heyman teased sealing Bearer in cement unless the Deadman 'did the right thing'.

After dispatching the team of Bubba Ray and D-Von, Undertaker set his sights on Bearer, now up to his neck in cement, only to continue burying him, seemingly killing a man on live TV.

No-one bought this for a second, and the match remains as one of the dullest and dumbest main events.

#1 Diesel Vs. King Mabel (Summerslam 1995)

This match was the peak of an awful year for WWE.
This match was the peak of an awful year for WWE.

1995 has often been seen as the worst year for the WWF.

With Kevin 'Diesel' Nash riding high as World Champion, the fans were quick to reject the big man, favoring smaller Superstars such as former Champion Bret Hart, and up-and-comers such as Shawn Michaels.

Clearly, the company weren't listening to their fans, as they decided to have Diesel face the colossal King Mabel at Summerslam.

To say this match is dull is a gross understatement, as Mabel revealed his oft-alluded to 'Royal Plan', which ended up being just crushing Diesel in the corner.

Despite the efforts of those on commentary, including McMahon himself, fans could not have cared less about these two. Diesel got the pin, retained the Championship and fans wonder to this day how the company survived this truly awful year.
