5 WWE Superstars who were expected to make big returns but fizzled out

Remember Bluetista?

They say that expectations are always the root of disappointments. This is applicable to everything in life including professional wrestling. And due to the sheer amount of passion that is involved when you are a diehard fan of the business, the disappointments that come along are too hard to handle.

Throughout the course of the professional wrestling history, we’ve seen ourselves holding too much at stake when a return is set to happen.

We lose our minds and count the days down to the actual moment, but then it ends up disappointing us. Here are some of such expected big returns that ended up disappointing us in the end.

#5 Tensai

Tensai was a great idea on paper

In the early 2000s, Matt Bloom enjoyed a solid amount of success with WWE playing various gimmicks. He had his part in some memorable matches during this stay but was later cut by WWE.

This release carried Bloom all the way to Japan where he reincarnated as a monster heel. Bloom was so successful in Japan that WWE decided to bring him back as a big deal.

They played out vignettes and promos for his return and on paper and the idea was perfect. However, in execution, it flopped as the fans were still stuck in the time where Bloom played the A-Train character.

One thing led to another and Bloom finally settled for a backstage role in the Performance Centre.

#4 Scott Hall

2002 run was a disaster

The way in which one remembers Scott Hall depends on perspective. We could either remember him as the creative genius that gave us some classics, or we could remember him as the wrestler that had problems with his personal demons.

This contrast was perhaps the reason why Scott Hall’s return to WWE didn’t work out.

The returned happened on 2002 and Hall was part of the WWE’s version of NWo. Forgettable in-ring work combined with bad booking from WWE resulted in a disastrous spell for the former Razor Ramon and it ended up being a spell that neither Hall nor Vince McMahon would want to remember.

#3 Sable

Could not replicate the initial success

Sable was a woman that hit the highest peaks of popularity during the Attitude Era. Her popularity was even compared to the likes of Steve Austin and The Rock at some point. Sable was initially paired with Marc Mero but later, she broke out on her own and found success.

In 1999, she quit the company and filed a lawsuit. The case was settled outside and four years later this set up a return for Sable.

She returned to SmackDown in 2003 but could not replicate the impact that she had made during his initial run. In fact, her new run did not produce too many memorable moments either.

#2 Alberto Del Rio

Del Rio is still struggling for a clear direction

WWE was firmly behind Alberto Del Rio when he arrived in the company. He had a main event level push, won the Money in the Bank, Royal Rumble and the WWE championship in one stretch.

Despite this big push, Del Rio’s stock fell big time in front of the fans and he was slowly relegated to a mid-carder. Del Rio’s initial run came to an abrupt end due to a backstage altercation which got him fired.

Del Rio would return months later and get a clean win over John Cena. In turn, he also won the United States Championship, but this was the only good part about his return. His momentum cooled down fast and he is still struggling to find a clear direction.

#1 Batista

The Animal is currently pursuing success in Hollywood

Batista is someone that enjoyed huge success during his initial stay with the company. From his start as a member of the Evolution to his departure years later as a main event star, Batista showed exponential growth.

He left the company in 2010 after being unhappy with the direction they were heading but after four years, WWE announced that Batista was set to return.

Fans were eagerly awaiting his return, but things did not go as everyone planned. Rustiness was there to be seen and when WWE gave Batista a better push instead of concentrating on Daniel Bryan, it made the situation messy.

Batista turned into a joke soon after and he left for Hollywood later.
