2020 is nearing its end, and the WWE Universe is all set to bid goodbye to another exciting year. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic hampering the shows for the better part of the year, the company somehow managed to present its shows on a weekly basis, by first transferring the events to the Performance Center, and then introducing the concept of the WWE ThunderDome.

A long string of WWE Superstars impressed us throughout the year, most notably Drew McIntyre and Roman Reigns. In this slideshow though, we will be taking a look at three WWE Superstars who were given new gimmicks, as well as two Superstars who brought back old gimmicks.

#5 Carmella (got a new gimmick)

Carmella

WWE Superstar Carmella spent the better part of the COVID-19 pandemic away from the in-ring action. She had last wrestled a match back in April, in a winning effort against Mandy Rose. A while ago, WWE began airing vignettes on SmackDown, hyping up the arrival of a mystery woman on the Blue brand. Finally, WWE revealed the identity of the mystery woman, back in October. The woman was none other than Carmella, who was donning the gimmick of the SmackDown's new 'untouchable' woman. Carmella later revealed why she underwent a character change in WWE.

That wasn't me. That was not me. That was what everyone out there wanted me to be. And I was sick of it. I am back to what I should be doing and I should be on top. And I'm going to do whatever it takes to be on top. That's exactly what I did tonight. And pretty soon the entire WWE universe, the entire world is going to know exactly why I am untouchable.

Carmella and Sasha Banks are currently feuding on WWE SmackDown

She went on to kick off a feud with Sasha Banks, who had now become the new SmackDown Women's Champion following her big win against Bayley inside Hell In A Cell. Banks and Carmella squared off with the belt on the line on tonight's edition of SmackDown, and the match ended with Carmella picking up the win via DQ. At the upcoming WWE TLC 2020 pay-per-view, Carmella has another opportunity to take the belt from Banks.

#4 Randy Orton (brought back an old gimmick)

Randy Orton

Earlier this year, WWE legend Randy Orton attacked his former tag team partner Edge following the latter's Royal Rumble appearance, making it known that The Legend Killer was back. Randy Orton was dubbed The Legend Killer during his early years in the company, as he ran roughshod over a string of WWE legends and put each one of them down over a long stretch of time. The Legend Killer was back in WWE with Orton's attack on Edge, and he didn't stop here.

Randy Orton attacked several WWE legends this year

Over the next several months, Orton attacked a bunch of other WWE legends, including Shawn Michaels, Christian, Big Show, and his mentor, Ric Flair. The Legend Killer was back with a bang and wasn't taking any prisoners. He set his sights on Drew McIntyre's WWE title and went on to win the belt inside Hell In A Cell. Unfortunately, Orton's WWE title reign didn't last long and McIntyre won the belt back on an episode of RAW. Orton has cooled down a bit since then, and understandably so, as he's currently feuding with one of the most dangerous entities in all of WWE, The Fiend.

#3 Alexa Bliss (got a new gimmick)

The Fiend and Alexa Bliss

Alexa Bliss isn't the person she used to be once. The Goddess was a normal human being with her only goal in WWE being to rule the women's division. It all changed, back in August, when Bliss was attacked by The Fiend on WWE SmackDown. The Fiend's attack on Bliss left a lasting impression on her, and things would never be the same again. Over the next few weeks, Bliss slowly and steadily underwent a sinister change, and finally aligned with The Fiend.

Alexa Bliss is now a mainstay on WWE RAW

The duo is currently on RAW, and feuding with WWE legend Randy Orton. The Fiend and Alexa Bliss is quite possibly the most destructive duo in all of WWE at the moment. Bliss is now a possessed woman who's ready to go to great lengths for the sake of The Fiend. The next few months are going to be interesting, as we will get to see how Bliss' new character is handled on the Red brand. A crazed Bliss with the RAW Women's title on her shoulder looks promising and is something that can certainly happen somewhere down the line.

#2 The Undertaker (brought back an old gimmick)

The Undertaker

WWE legend The Undertaker was buried alive at Survivor Series 2003, marking the end of 'The American Badass' character. The Undertaker returned at WrestleMania 20 to exact revenge on Kane and brought back The Deadman in the process. For the next 16 years, The Undertaker donned the persona of The Phenom. Many fans were fine with the gimmick, but there was a bunch that wanted to see The American Badass make his return.

The Undertaker defeated AJ Styles at WWE WrestleMania 36

It finally happened at WrestleMania 36, where The Undertaker took on AJ Styles in a Boneyard match. The match was a cinematic presentation and was heavily lauded by the WWE Universe. In the end, The Undertaker buried Styles alive and rode off into the sunset on his bike. The WWE Universe got to witness The American Badass once again, and WWE did an incredible job with the match as well. This match will quite possibly go down as The Undertaker's final outing, as he finally called it quits at Survivor Series 2020 in what was dubbed his 'Final Farewell'.

#1 Roman Reigns (got a new gimmick)

Roman Reigns finished his feud with King Corbin on the road to WWE WrestleMania 36 and was set to take on Goldberg for the Universal title at The Show of Shows. The COVID-19 pandemic made him change his mind, and The Big Dog went on a months-long hiatus. Reigns finally came back at SummerSlam 2020, but this guy wasn't the old Reigns anymore. Reigns showed heel tendencies while attacking The Fiend and Braun Strowman to end the show and later aligned with Paul Heyman to cement his heel turn.

Roman Reigns is currently ruling WWE SmackDown as its top heel

Reigns went on to win the Universal title and is still holding the coveted belt on SmackDown. He now calls himself The Tribal Chief, and this heel persona has been a big hit with the fans ever since his return. The WWE Universe had been wanting to see Reigns embrace his dark side for years on end, and WWE finally gave them what they had been asking for. Reigns' heel turn has turned him into one of the most compelling characters in wrestling today, and The Tribal Chief is bound to rule SmackDown for a long time to come.
