Who is a WWE lifer and who is not?
Who is a WWE lifer and who is not?

WWE has been at the top of the professional wrestling industry for a very long time without any significant competition. However, this has changed dramatically in the last couple of years with the emergence of All Elite Wrestling.

Over the last two years, many major WWE stars have left the company and joined AEW, IMPACT Wrestling, or even New Japan Pro Wrestling. Names like The Big Show and Christian, who were considered to be "WWE lifers", shocked fans by joining the company's rival promotions. This has made one thing clear that with the current state of the pro wrestling industry, anything is possible. But at the same time, there are some major stars who will likely never leave WWE.

Let's take a look at three current Superstars who are WWE lifers and two others who might leave for other promotions. Be sure to comment down and let us know your thoughts on the same.

The opinions in the article are those of the writer and not of Sportskeeda.

#3 WWE lifer: Roman Reigns

Starting with the current Universal Champion, Roman Reigns has constantly been pushed as the "face of WWE" by Vince McMahon for many years. The WWE Chairman has left no stone unturned to ensure that Reigns stays at the very top of the roster.

It was finally in 2020 that Roman Reigns returned and had a massive character change, turning into a proper heel and aligning himself with Paul Heyman. The character change has done wonders for The Tribal Chief as he is undoubtedly one of the best heels that WWE has seen recently.

Roman Reigns will surely continue to be on the top of the WWE roster for many more years to come, which likely makes him a WWE lifer. One can even argue that he might not find such a prominent position in any other promotion's roster.

#2 Might leave WWE for another promotion: Randy Orton

The 14-time World Champion Randy Orton has been the backbone of WWE for many years. Not many can claim to have had a more accomplished career in WWE than The Viper. There's not much left for him to accomplish in WWE and he is in a position where he can massively help any other promotion.

Interestingly, Randy Orton has teased joining AEW in the past, but that of course didn't happen. During an episode of Busted Open Radio, WWE Hall of Famer Mark Henry mentioned that Randy Orton is a good businessman and will keep his options open.

"He's always been a good businessman. He's always, you know taken the backseat when he should have said, 'Hey guys, I'm not doing that.' He's always been a good businessman. So why wouldn't he be a good businessman and say, 'You know what? I need to entertain this conversation. It's not about the money, it's about creative control. I think that it would be more creative control and time off with Randy."

Of course, WWE could make him stay by offering him a chance to break Ric Flair's record of 16 world title reigns. But ultimately, it is up to Randy Orton to decide how he wants to spend what will likely be the final decade of his in-ring career.

#2 WWE lifer: Charlotte Flair

Speaking of the most accomplished Superstars, Charlotte Flair has already established herself as the greatest women's Superstar in WWE history. Having won 13 women's titles in WWE, she has a very good chance to break her father Ric Flair's record of 16 world titles.

Charlotte Flair has been at the center of WWE's women's division ever since making her main roster debut in 2015. While fans have expressed their frustration about her getting continuously pushed into the championship picture and taking away the spotlight from other Superstars, WWE will likely continue to push her in the foreseeable future.

The Queen has proven time and again the value she brings to the table. Be it her exceptional wrestling skills, promos, or character work, she has excelled both as a babyface as well as a vicious heel. Many even consider her to be the best female pro wrestler in the entire world.

With the kind of position she holds on the current WWE roster and her family ties with the company, Charlotte Flair is likely a WWE lifer and might never leave to join another promotion.

#1 Might leave WWE for another promotion: Goldberg

WWE Hall of Famer Goldberg is one of the few veterans who is still an active in-ring competitor. His WWE run since returning in 2016 has been nothing short of controversial as he has had to face a lot of criticism for his wrestling skills and taking the spotlight from the younger generation. Yet, no one can argue that he is still a massive draw for WWE.

Last year, former WWE manager Jim Cornette revealed that AEW President Tony Khan was interested in signing Goldberg and booking his infamous streak all over again.

"Goldberg was huge on Tony Khan's want list. He wanted Goldberg to come out and do the streak over again. I mentioned how much you think he's gonna charge for a 30-second job match? Probably the same as a main event PPV match."

Currently, Goldberg is contracted to WWE till 2023 and competes in a couple of matches every year. However, we have seen the likes of Sting join AEW at the age of 61, so one can't completely rule out the possibility of Goldberg joining AEW in the future.

#1 WWE lifer: John Cena

Arguably one of the most popular WWE Superstars of all time, John Cena has had a highly accomplished career with WWE. Having been the poster boy of the company for more than a decade, The Leader of Cenation has helped establish WWE in global markets. He has been one of its pillars, especially during the PG era.

While John Cena is no longer a full-time competitor, he still contributes to the company in different ways including merchandise sales and promotional videos. The 16-time World Champion last wrestled for WWE at WrestleMania 36 where he faced and lost to Bray Wyatt in the bizarre Firefly Fun House match. As of now, there is no confirmation on whether he'll appear at WrestleMania 37.

Following the footsteps of Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, John Cena has started his journey as an actor in Hollywood and has already been part of some massive projects and movies. It is unlikely that he'll return for a full-time wrestling run again for any other promotion. John Cena is a WWE lifer and just the idea of him joining any other promotion like AEW seems impractical.
