Mirabai Chanu

Mirabai Chanu stole the hearts of fans all around, breaking a whopping six games records in as many lifts. The 23-year-old lifted 80kg, 84kg, and 86kg in snatch, while lifting 103kg, 107kg, and 110kg in clean and jerk.

Mirabai Chanu was the strong favorite going into the Commonwealth Games and did not disappoint, lifting a total of 196 kg. Even more fascinating is the fact that this lift would've got her a silver medal in Rio 2016 Olympics.

Indonesia's Wahruni Augustiana lifted a total of 192 Kg in the 48 kg weight category in the last edition of the Olympics. Mirabai Chanu's lift of 196 Kg would put her above Augustiana. Unfortunately, she failed to rank on the leaderboard in 2016 at all.

Chanu's last three lifts tell a different story, however. She lifted 194 Kg in the world championships, 189 Kg in the Commonwealth Championship and now, 196 Kg in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Her performances mean that she would rank amongst the top 3 in not only Rio but London and Beijing as well.

Chanu's latest performance has brought a new ray of hope for the country. Going into the Tokyo Olympics, Chanu will be one of the strongest contenders in her weight category.

Chanu hails from Imphal East District of Manipur. The weightlifter has delivered consistent performances in the past, ranking her amongst the best. Disappointment in Rio 2106 wouldn't stop the juggernaut that is Chanu, winning the gold easily in Gold Coast 2018, breaking six records in her as many lifts.

In the previous edition of the Commonwealth, Chanu had won the silver medal, finishing behind fellow compatriot Kumukcham Sanjitha. Chanu won the gold at 2017 World Weightlifting Championships, breaking the competition record in the process. She was also awarded the Padma Shri in 2018.
