Who is Becky G? Singer notes she was only 12 when RuPaul's Drag Race premiered

RuPaul’s Drag Race returned to MTV with the second part-part premiere of its 16th season featuring Becky G. The Emmy-winning reality TV show features 14 new drag queens competing for the grand prize of $200,000.While the series star RuPaul serves as the host, head judge and mentor, a few other prolific names on the panel include Ts Madison, Ross Mathews, Carson Kressley, and Michelle Visage.

While actress Charlize Theron joined them as a special guest judge on the first part of the season 16 premiere, this week, the seat was taken by pop singer Becky G.

As per the format of the show, talented drag queens compete to outdo their opponents. The ultimate winner of the competition series earns the title of America’s Next Drag Superstar.

During the second part of the season 16 premiere, head judge RuPaul excitedly welcomed Becky G on the panel, saying:

“A big hello to Becky G. Now they tell me that you were 16 when this show just premiered.”

In response, the pop singer quipped:

“Actually, I was 12. But who’s counting?”

Who is RuPaul's Drag Race's guest judge Becky G?

Becky G, aka Rebbeca Marie Gomez, is a songwriter, actress and multi-platinum singer. With Mexican roots, she was born and raised in California, USA. In 2020, the pop singer bagged the American Music Award for Favorite Latin Female Artist. This was followed by the release of smash-hit album, Esquemas, in 2021, which ranked number one on the Latin Pop Albums Chart of Billboard.

Becky G has had an illustrious career - she went from earning the highest-charting single of her career to performing on the Coachella main stage. Additionally, she also announced her first-ever headlining tour more than a decade after the release of her breakout hit, Shower.

Her second album, Esquemas, spawned several hit tracks, including Mamii, her collaboration with Karol G. The high-energy number ranked number 15 on the Billboard Hot 100, outdoing the record of Shower and also earning critical acclamation. The song not only catapulted her to new heights of stardom, but also cemented that the pop performer is here to stay.

In 2023, she rocked the Coachella stage and subsequently announced embarking on the Mi Casa, Su Casa Tour throughout North America. At the time, she also released her third studio album, Esquinas, which was an exploration of regional Mexican music in honor of her family.

Before making her debut appearance on RuPaul’s Drag Race season 16, she served as a host, judge, and performer on multiple shows including Becoming A Popstar, A Tiny Audience, and MTV Millennial Awards 2022.

Contestants Geneva Karr, Hershii LiqCour-Jete, Megami, Nymphia Wind, Plane Jane, and Plasma competed, with Plane Jane emerging as the winner. The Emmy-winning reality competition exclusively airs on MTV.
