Martin Scorsese teases "one more" film with Daniel Day-Lewis

Martin Scorsese returned in 2023 to great acclaim once again, propelling his film, Killers of the Flower Moon, to immense success, both at the box office and in the critics' circle. The acclaimed film, which also featured the likes of Leonardo Di Caprio, Lily Gladstone, Robert De Niro, and Brendan Fraser, won Scorsese the Best Director Award at The National Board of Review awards.

The award was presented to Scorsese by none other than Daniel Day-Lewis, the legendary actor who has been described as one of the greatest actors in the history of cinema, with three Academy Awards, four BAFTA Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and two Golden Globe Awards to his name.

Day-Lewis retired for the second time in his career six years back. Scorsese, who worked with Daniel Day-Lewis twice before hinted in his acceptance speech that maybe he had time to do "one more" film with Day-Lewis, exciting fans all around.

Though it is unlikely that the 66-year-old actor will take up any film project in the future, Scorsese seemed to hint that he had something in mind for the veteran star.

Daniel Day-Lewis and Martin Scorsese collaborated successfully twice before, for The Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York. Both the films are critically acclaimed and the Day-Lewis seemed to find his footing perfectly in Scorsese's style.

While accepting the award, Martin Scorsese included Day-Lewis in his speech, saying:

"We did two films together and it’s one of the greatest experiences of my life… maybe there’s time for one more."

This seemed to indicate that he had thought something keeping Day-Lewis in mind. But the 66-year-old actor announced his retirement six years back and he has not taken up any movies over this entire duration.

While it seems unlikely that he will take up any project, Martin Scorsese might be among the rare directors who could convince Day-Lewis to change his mind.

Why did Daniel Day-Lewis retire?

The famous Daniel Day-Lewis has been a star since the first time he appeared on screen, making sure to catch the eye of anyone watching the films. The actor was so committed to his roles that he went to erratic lengths at times.

His method acting style reportedly put great strain on his mental and physical health. When announcing his retirement in 2017, the actor did not expand much. He was renowned for his complicated relationship with acting and he simply said he did not want to get "sucked back" into another project. His acting style had already seen him take multi-year breaks between some of the bigger projects.

Day-Lewis had also retired once before in 1997 but came back to acting again in 2000. So, it might not be impossible for the actor to return, but it seems he will need a solid reason if it were to happen.
