Chicago Fire, one of the most popular shows on NBC, is confirmed for a return with a fiery season 12. It has been teased that Taylor Kinney, who plays the role of Kelly Severide, is set to make a comeback.

A native of Neffsville, Kinney has played Lt. Kelly Severide since the 2012 premiere of Chicago Fire. His return was confirmed in the teaser for the Wednesday Night One Chicago show's latest season. Among the shows are Chicago Med and Chicago P.D. too.

The 42-year-old Kinney announced in January 2023 that he was taking a leave of absence from Chicago Fire to "deal with a personal matter," which he has not shared publicly.

Severide's departure from Firehouse 51 to enroll in a top-tier arson investigation training program in Alabama explained Kinney's absence from the program. When Severide's wife Stella Kidd (Miranda Rae Mayo) found out near the conclusion of Season 11 that he had finished his training but hadn't yet returned to Firehouse 51, she started to worry.

A lot of questions were left for viewers by Season 11. After taking a leave of absence from the program, Taylor Kinney's character Severide was not present for the finale.

In the same episode, Jesse Spencer made a comeback to play Captain Matt Casey. Several cliffhangers in the program left viewers wondering what would happen to their beloved characters in season 12.

However, the mystery surrounding Taylor Kinney's character, Kelly Severide has been cleared for the upcoming season. The trailer for Season 12 of Chicago Fire clearly shows that Stella Kidd is reunited with her hubby, Kelly.

In the premiere trailer for Season 12 of Chicago Fire, Kelly Severide is shown kissing Stella Kidd. He goes on to say:

“I’m here. We’re in this together.”

In the trailer, Kidd responds:

“I basically had to fly to Alabama, put you in handcuffs and drag you home.”

She's reuniting with her husband after a long absence, and it's expected that the pair will sizzle on screen once again. However, the summary for "Barely Gone," the first episode of the season, suggests that "an arson case tests Kidd and Severide's relationship."

Furthermore, it's not shocking that Severide's return won't completely resolve "Stellaride's" issues, considering what the pair has recently been through.

Showrunner Andrea Newman told TVLine about the reunion between Kelly and Stella:

“There’s a whole new dynamic between them. It’s kind of obvious within, like, one second of the show starting. They still can’t keep their hands off each other. You can tell they’re still in love, but there’s this new edge to their relationship."
"The investigation is going to bring a lot to the fore. We’ll get to explore what they’re going through and what the issues are coming off him taking off for ATF last season".

She also claimed in the interview that Serverride would be at the "front and center" of the upcoming season, which is highly anticipated by fans.

Chicago Fire Season 12 will premiere on NBC on Wednesday, January 17, 2024, at 9 p.m. ET. The new season will consist of 13 episodes.
