Commentary

A manic encounter but the caravan rolls on in IPL 2023. Match 7 tomorrow sees the Delhi Capitals play their first home fixture at the Arun Jaitley Stadium as they host defending champions Gujarat Titans. A blistering opening stand, a vintage Thala Dhoni finish, a masterful spin-choke and some excellent fielding by the boundary ropes. The Chennai faithful couldn't have asked for a better return as they saw their beloved Super Kings get on the board for IPL 2023. A win that CSK needed after the opening loss and they will be buoyed by this ahead of their next game against arch-rivals Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium. If they can continue to dominate at home though, they will be a force to reckon with this season. As for the Lucknow Super Giants, they fought hard and came back well with the ball before giving the hosts a real scare with the bat. Some tough lessons learned as they head back home to face the Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday, April 7.

Moeen Ali is the Player of the Match for his pivotal spell, apart from a handy batting cameo. Here's what he has to say: It's not easy, it was a tough one because they have big hitters. I just tried to bowl almost like Test cricket. I tried to spin it as much as I can. I think it was important to try and spin the ball. They have big hitters. That combination (with Santner) was really nice. I thought that partnership worked and we took wickets. MS knows his thing obviously. The great thing about playing under MS is that he knows when to bowl whom. I probably wouldn't have bowled in the last game too. The pressure is on the right-handers to hit to the big side. I'm obviously not going to bowl all the time with Jadeja here as well. I think it's about partnerships.

MS Dhoni (Chennai Super Kings captain): Yes I can hear you. It was a terrific, high-scoring game. All of us were thinking how the wicket will be. We have practiced for some time and we had that doubt. Overall it was the perfect first game that could have happened. Not to forget that this was the first full house game we've played in five-six games. I thought it will be much slower so I felt it was a wicket we could have scored runs. In the second innings they were able to play the big shots. I was surprised to see the wickets. We have to see over the next six games if game after game we can come up with wickets like this. (Any weaknesses to address?) It's the fast bowling that needs to slightly improve. They need to bowl according to the conditions. Even if it is on the flatter side, have fielders and bowl in areas where you are trying to get the batters to hit over the fielders. Keep an eye on what the opposition bowlers are doing so that you can plan according to the strength or pace you have. They must also not bowl no balls or wides else they'll have to play under a new captain (grins). It will be my second warning and I'll be off. Whenever it's a high-scoring game it's important to get the most. The only reason you have scored those runs is because the surface is nice. 180 is a nice score but if you've scored 200 and the wicket is on the better side, it's always one hit or two hits that's the difference. So the more you get the better.

Mitchell Santner (Chennai Super Kings): It was a pretty good wicket to bat on. Both powerplays looked challenging for the bowlers so it was our job to tie it up in the middle. Always nice when Mo gets wickets and I could tie it up at the other end. On this wicket it makes it a little bit easier with the boundary dimensions. You want to try and get them to hit to the big side. Whether it was short and wide or slower and wider I tried to use it. That's all in my control. It's a privilege to play as many games (as possible). It was probably a bit flatter than I wanted but as the tournament goes along, we'll play a couple more spinners. It was awesome (to be back here). I have fond memories from 2019 and obviously one side of the stands was shut. It was great to play in front of a loud crowd. Obviously a sea of yellow and it was a privilege to play in front of them.

KL Rahul, Lucknow Super Giants captain: (Bowling performance) Not the most ideal start after winning the toss. The first couple of overs, the bowlers said it was sticky and there was a bit of movement. I do not think we put the ball in the right areas and once you give that momentum away, they really capitalise when they have quality batters. Few mistakes from our side but Rutu and Conway played some brilliant shots. Something for us to learn and get better at. (On the second half of their bowling innings) When you bowl first on a fresh wicket, it takes a bit of time to understand what the right pace and length is. To go for 70-odd in the first six overs is what cost us at the end. We made good use of the powerplay when batting but it was certain phases we did not win and let slip away. (On Bishnoi and Mayers) Kyle has come in with some really good form and good to see that he has come here with the same approach. The innings he played at Lucknow was brilliant, he made the wicket seem flat. He did the same today and it was great to see with the opportunities he has gotten. I know when everything is against us, he (Bishnoi) puts his hand up, picks wickets and contains runs. Good to see different players putting their hands up, giving us the best chance to win games. (On the decision at the toss) Nah, not really. We did not win a few phases in the game and that is why we ended up not winning this contest. We were in the game quite a lot in the second half but we kept pressing on and that is how we want to bat. 4-5 of our batters got out on the boundary line....and those margins did not go our way today.

This was the day millions of CSK fans around the world were looking forward to. Their happy homecoming to their fortress. And the Yellow Army have made it worthwhile by registering their first points for the season. It all came on the back of a mammoth total that they put up but the way the Lucknow Super Giants began, there was every reason to believe that the Super Kings' party was about to be foiled.

Kyle Mayers picked up seamlessly from where he left off in the last game as he tore into the seamers left right and center. Simply put, the Super Kings were listless as they bowled all over the place with even the seasoned Deepak Chahar bowling completely against his field. Mayers tore into him and Tushar Deshpande, who bowled a flurry of no balls and wides and even Ben Stokes' return to bowling wasn't rosy. At 73/0 in 5 overs, it seemed as though the Super Giants would send the hosts into submission, with the Chepauk crowd silenced big time.

It was rather surprising that Moeen Ali didn't bowl earlier to Mayers but eventually, the offie struck and dismissed the West Indian - not before the latter butchered another sensational half-century though. But then began the age-old CSK template - the spin-choke. Moeen and Mitchell Santner were impeccable with their lines and lengths while mixing their pace and with the batters looking to hit across the line, they perished in the process.

All of a sudden, Lucknow were four down at the halfway mark although Nicholas Pooran stated his intentions clearly once he came out to bat. Moeen continued to chip away at the wickets and returned a four-for, even as Santner bowled a miserly spell of his own to send the asking rate shooting up. Ravindra Jadeja was introduced late but when Pooran imposed himself on the veteran, it was back to the pacers as far as mD Dhoni was concerned.

He took a big gamble with Deshpande and the Mumbai seamer duly responded with some excellent bowling to his field, also nipping Pooran in the bud as Ben Stokes held on for dear life. Chahar endured further misery, but Deshpande and Rajvardhan Hangargekar held their nerve admirably to pull CSK past the finish line with some outstanding bit of execution. It didn't always come off, but the fact that they stuck to their plan meant that the Super Kings gave their fans plenty of reasons to cheer. Ayush Badoni played a rather bizarre innings as he failed to swing his bat early. That, coupled with CSK's excellent fielding by the boundary ropes, went a long way in determining the fate of this game. Stick around for the presentation...

An anti-climactic finish but those in yellow won't mind one bit. They've got the job done and it's been a happy homecoming for MS Dhoni and Co. Chennai Super Kings win by 12 runs!
