Fortnite Chapter 4 Storyline has stopped making all sense

Fortnite's storyline is what keeps the metaverse alive and spinning. If it weren't for the cast of larger-than-life characters, twists and turns, and cliffhangers, the game perhaps would have lost its popularity in ragtime.

Nevertheless, given how the season has been playing out post the update v23.40, the storyline seems out of place. A criminal enterprise has found its way to the island, and nothing seems to make sense anymore, or at least for the time being.

Has Fortnite Chapter 4 Storyline stopped making any sense? Well, according to some within the community, nothing currently makes sense. On the one hand, a medieval theme is dominant and the center of attraction. On the other hand, there's an ongoing heist and/or gang-war on the island.

While the Medieval-Cyberpunk theme works well, it feels out of place when accompanied by a criminal theme towards the end of the season. How, when, or even why vaults came on the island remains a mystery. With The Ageless and Rift Warden Stellan busy with the Rift Gate, the ongoing heist theatrics make no sense, or does it?

Fortnite Chapter 4's storyline is a beautiful mess

While some would state that the storyline is a complete mess at the moment, it has to do with perspective. From one angle, it makes no sense and does not fit the dominant theme or plot of the season, but when looked at from a different perspective, it adds more flavor to things.

The best way to describe the "Most Wanted" storyline that's ongoing at the moment would be to label it as a side plot or plot-B. Given that the island is a huge place, multiple storylines can coexist independently. While their themes don't always coincide, it makes the world feel more lively.

A good example, as pointed out by a Reddit user called LeoHotDog250, would be the food feud that took place back in Chapter 1 between Pizza Pete and Durrr Burger. Although subtle, the two brands fought for control on the island. After the volcano exploded, Durrr Burger became a prominent brand in Neo Tilted, and Pizza Pete stayed in Mega Mall.

Back then, these functioned more as side stories for players to take note of and follow to the very end; however, with Epic Games raising the bar in Fortnite Chapter 4, the "Most Wanted" side-plot has challenges, cosmetics, and a loot pool associated with it.

While it may not fit into the main storyline or plot, it's a welcome change from pace to setting. To be fair, the developers did hint at something from the very start of the season. They added posters, and certain NPCs with criminal backgrounds were added to the island. Although it was just Wild Card at first, pretty soon, others like Renegade Shadow and Rebel were added to the mix.

Are side plots good for Fortnite, or do they dilute the main storyline?

When executed correctly with a lot of hype and buildup, side plots often outshine the main storyline; however, considering that "Most Wanted" only started towards the end of Fortnite Chapter 4 Season 1, it won't tarnish or dampen the memory of the main storyline that's in development.

Also, with Epic Games giving The Ageless and Rift Warden Stellan plenty of screen time and backstory, they won't be forgotten anytime soon. In all probability, they will continue to exist on the island until the end of Chapter 4.

On the flipside of things, if the side-plots are bad or end terribly, like when Doctor Slone opened the Secret Bunker at the end of Fortnite Chapter 2, few would care for them. But that's not the case this time around.

So while a side plot may make no sense or be completely out of theme, they are a welcome break for the community. Given the overwhelming positive response to the "Most Wanted '' side-plot (not to mention the freebies), it's safe to assume that Epic Games has nailed it this time. Hopefully, the trend continues in the coming seasons as well.
