"He's reminding me of Timo Werner at Chelsea" – Pundit believes Liverpool have to address 23-year-old star's struggles

Jurgen Klopp
Jurgen Klopp's summer signing has been likened to Timo Werner.

Former Chelsea attacker Tony Cascarino has shared his concerns about Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez, comparing him to former Blues forward Timo Werner.

Nunez, 23, has struggled to live up to expectations since arriving from Benfica in a deal worth up to £85 million last summer. He has failed to justify his price tag in his first season in England after his 34-goal season in Portugal.

In his column for The Times, Cascarino shared his thoughts on Nunez's outings at Liverpool this term. He wrote:

"This is going to be a huge summer for Liverpool. Some big names will leave, they need new faces and they've got a major issue to resolve: Darwin Nunez. He's had the odd moment where it's clicked but with Luis Díaz and Diogo Jota back, he looks nowhere near the starting XI. Cody Gakpo is also currently ahead of him in the pecking order."

Comparing the 16-cap Uruguay international to Werner, the former Marseille striker continued:

"I hope I'm wrong in the end but he's reminding me of Timo Werner at Chelsea – lots of running, effort and promise but ultimately falling short in the danger areas. He needs a big, big pre-season with lots of goals for his confidence."

Nunez, who has a deal until June 2028 at Anfield, has started just 26 matches this campaign due to four minor injury issues. He has netted 15 goals so far, averaging a goal every 158 minutes for Jurgen Klopp's outfit so far.

Werner, on the other hand, scored just 12 goals in 44 starts across all competitions for Chelsea in his first season in England. He missed a single match through injury, averaging a goal every 319 minutes in the 2020-21 term.

Gabriel Agbonlahor tips Liverpool to snub Chelsea star this summer

Speaking to Football Insider, former Aston Villa forward Gabriel Agbonlahor stated that Liverpool should prioritize Brighton & Hove Albion star Alexis Mac Allister over Chelsea ace Mason Mount. He elaborated:

"I would go for Mac Allister. I think he is a top player, Mount has not been at his best this season. Mac Allister has won the World Cup, he is showing that Argentinian swagger in his play. I like him... I would get him over Mount."

Mac Allister, 24, has been in stellar form for Brighton this campaign, registering 12 goals and three assists in 38 overall appearances so far. He could replace Jordan Henderson as the right-sided central midfielder at Liverpool.

Mount, on the other hand, is believed to have made progress over a new contract at Chelsea in the past couple of weeks. He is currently in a standoff with the Blues as he is keen to secure a £200,000 per week salary package.

Mount, who registered 29 goals and assists in the 2021-22 season, has scored netted thrice and assisted six times in 35 games in the current campaign.
