"Miami sucked clearly": McLaren boss reflects on team's dismal performance in the last race

McLaren CEO Zak Brown recently reflected on the team's dismal performance in the Miami GP. Both Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri failed to score points, finishing 17th and 19th, respectively.

The Woking-based team has suffered a dismal drop in form this season and is now considered a backmarker team, given their woeful results. While Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris are undoubtedly worth their hype, McLaren's 2023 challenger has been unable to serve them adequately.

Speaking about his team's poor performance in Miami, Zak Brown told the F1 Nation podcast:

"Miami sucked, clearly disappointing. We understand why we were where we needed to be in Miami so the first step is - if you have an issue - understanding it versus scratching your head. I think we'll go alright in Monaco. We obviously came to the table with an underdeveloped car at the start of the year. We knew that. It turned out that we knew we weren't going to be where we want to be. But the exciting part is, we think we're going to get a lot better."

Former F1 Champion Mario Andretti puzzled by McLaren's poor form

Mario Andretti recently expressed his bewilderment regarding McLaren's unexpected decline this season. The Woking team has had a subpar season compared to its usual standards, further exacerbated by the remarkable progress made by its competitors.

Aston Martin, who lagged far behind the British team in 2022, has now emerged as a leading contender. Alpine, a team that fiercely battled with McLaren for fourth place in the championship last season, has also made significant strides forward.

McLaren endured a disastrous outing in Miami, with Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri struggling on both tire compounds. When questioned about the reasons behind McLaren's struggles this season, Andretti candidly admitted his lack of understanding regarding the team's current situation.

Andretti told PlanetF1:

"I wish I knew, because then I would bottle it and sell it to them! It’s hard to be able to evaluate anything like that. Especially in Miami, I don’t know what in the world happened to them. It seemed like, in first practice while the track was still green and very slippery, they seemed to be somewhat on pace with the rest."

With Zak Brown expecting better results in Monaco, it will be interesting to see how Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri perform this weekend.
