"He taught me 3 basic words": Lewis Hamilton opens up about what his father taught him

Lewis Hamilton revealed that one of the key teachings from his father, when he was young, was three basic words - "never give up". The British driver did an interview recently with WSI (Wall Street Italia), where he was questioned about different aspects of his life. For Lewis, his father Anthony Hamilton has been a permanent fixture by him when he made his way through the junior categories.

In the first phase of Lewis Hamilton's career, his father was his manager as well and in the very early stages of his career, it was Anthony Hamilton who did multiple jobs to help the young Brit finance his racing career. Anthony was also one of the key fixtures standing next to Lewis in the fateful championship finale in 2021 in Abu Dhabi.

In conversation with WSI, Lewis Hamilton was questioned about the role his father played and what were the key teachings from him at a young age. The Mercedes driver credited his father with instilling the trait of never giving up in any situation.

"He taught me three basic words: never give up. These are the words he repeated to me most often. Not to give up, to keep pushing, to continue to fight,” he said.

“When you're a kid and things seem too hard you'd just want to give up everything. My father, on the other hand, always spurred me on, telling me to stay focussed and move on. When I failed he told me to try again. His words became like a mantra,” the Brit added.

Eddie Irvine dismisses chances of Lewis Hamilton winning an eighth title

Lewis Hamilton was close to winning his eighth world title but fell short in the last race of the season in 2021. Former Ferrari driver and championship runner-up Eddie Irvine feels that the Mercedes driver is not winning an eighth title in his career.

"The era of Hamilton and Mercedes’ triumphs is now over. But Lewis is still a very good driver, very goal-oriented, and willing to get results. He is still doing a great job behind the wheel of an F1 car even if the comparison with Verstappen is tough, because Max is younger, has a bit more speed and a huge belief in his own means," Irvine added.

Hamilton has a contract with Mercedes until 2025. It will be interesting to see what his approach would be if the German team is unable to show the requisite improvement in the coming years.
