Veteran Sri Lankan cricketer Chamara Kapugedara suffered a horrific injury during the ongoing ODI against Pakistan.

The incident occurred during Pakistan's chase, in the second innings. After the end of the 10th over, wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella lobbed the ball at Kapugedara, who was walking away.

Unfortunately, he did notice the ball and was hit flush on the face, just below his eye, which led to a massive swelling.

He was immediately rushed off the field and is currently being treated.

Luckily enough, the ball did not his eye. If it did, the injury would have been a lot worse and he would have been in serious trouble.

There have been many horrific injuries in the past, a few of which have led to retirements as well.

South Africa's Mark Boucher was forced to retire from the game after suffering a severe eye injury during his country’s tour match against Somerset back in 2012.

The incident occurred when a ball from spinner Imran Tahir clean bowled Gemaal Hussain, while Boucher stood up to the stumps wearing a cap instead of a helmet.

Football too has seen a lot of similar injuries. Manchester United's Antonio Valencia suffered a similar injury back in 2014 after a nasty collision with Olympiacos forward Joel Campbell in the UEFA Champions League.

The Sri Lankan cricket team is currently taking on Pakistan in the 3rd ODI of the five-match series in UAE. With the home side chasing 209 for victory, they have got off to the perfect start with both the openers Fakhar Zaman and Imam-ul-Haq taking the attack to the Sri Lankan bowlers.

Earlier in the day, Sri Lanka, too, got off to a great start with Upul Tharanga scoring yet another half-century. However, they crumbled in the middle overs and suffered a batting collapse and were able to score only 208 in 48.2 overs.

Hasan Ali was the pick of the bowlers as he picked up a five-wicket haul. Shadab Khan picked up two wickets while Mohammed Hafeez and Junaid Khan picked up a wicket each.

After losing the Test series, Pakistan is looking to get their revenge by coming out victorious in the ODIs. With Pakistan leading 2-0, they will look to inflict a whitewash on Sri Lanka.

The two sides will take on each other in 3 T20Is as well with the third and final match taking place in Lahore.
