IPL 2018: Four wrist spinners who are on a roll this season

The art of wrist spin has become very popular in the Indian Premier League so much so that now every team is taking the field with at least one wrist spinner. The emergence of wrist-spinners in the batsman-friendly league has to be one of the notable things of this fast-growing era of cricket.

One thing that clearly stands out this season is that at least one of the top 3 wicket-takers from each team is a leg-spinner. Such is the dominance of wrist spinners in the Indian T20 league.

Here are the top four of those men who enriched the magic of wrist spin this season:


#4 Yuzvendra Chahal

The Haryana born leggie has been exceptional for Royal Challengers Bangalore over the years. The 27-year-old is known for his impressive variations. His ability to draw the big hitters into a slog with his widish leg-breaks and get them out stumped is a rare skill.

With 7 wickets in 8 matches, Chahal is the second highest wicket-taker for RCB. His economy rate of 7.62 is also the second best for RCB.

#3 Mujeeb Ur Rahman

The 17-year-old off spinner from Afghanistan has come into the 11th edition of the IPL with a reputation to his name. The youngster was roped in by KXIP for a whopping Rs. 4 Cr.

Mujeeb made an instant impression by taking the wickets of dangerous Colin Munro and Rishabh Pant in his debut match against DD at Mohali. His last over of the match against Delhi where he defended 17 runs bowling against the likes of Shreyas Iyer is a testimony to his growing stature.

Thus far the leggie has picked up 7 wickets in as many games at an economy of 6.52.

#2 Mayank Markande

Not many people know that the Mumbai Indians' latest sensation Mayank Markande was a part of India’s Under-19 squad in 2016. He came into limelight when he represented Punjab in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2017-18, where he showcased his skills by picking 5 wickets in 4 matches. On the back of that performance, the Punjab born leggie was roped in by MI for a mere Rs. 20 lakh in the auctions of IPL 2018.

The 20-year-old had an exceptional debut when picked up three crucial wickets for just 23 runs in his quota of 4 overs against CSK in the season opener.

With 11 wickets in 8 matches at an economy of 7.73, the leggie jointly leads the wickets column with Hyderabad's Siddarth Kaul.

#1 Rashid Khan

The mystery spinner from Afghanistan has now become a household name in the world cricket with his consistent performances in the shortest format of the game.

Rashid Khan made his IPL debut when Sunrisers Hyderabad bought him for Rs. 4 Cr. for the tenth edition of the IPL. The 19-year-old lived up to his reputation by picking 17 wickets in 14 matches for SRH in IPL 10.

This season he has been a vital cog in SRH's bowling line-up. SRH owes its major share of success this season to Rashid Khan. With 10 wickets in 8 matches, the leggie is just a wicket away from claiming the Purple Cap.
