Stats: Australia break 87-year-old record en-route thumping victory against England 

The Australian cricket team could not have asked for a better start to the Ashes as they cruised to a ten-wicket victory against their fierce rivals England in the first Test held at the Gabba.

David Warner and Cameron Bancroft ensured no hiccups for the Kangaroos as they chased down the total of 173 set by England with extreme ease.

In doing so, they broke an 87-year-old record as well, of the highest run chase achieved without losing a wicket.

The previous record, too, was set by Australia, way back in 1930, against West Indies. In fact, they hold the first four places on the list, with the third and fourth being against England, and West Indies, in 1990 and 1973 respectively.

The most recent victory on this list was achieved by Pakistan against Sri Lanka in 2015 in Galle.

England features twice on this list, having achieved huge victories against Australia and India in 1909 and 1980 respectively.

Surprisingly, the Indian cricket team do not feature on this list at all.

With the victory at the Gabba, Australia has taken a vital lead in the five-match series. It was the Australian bowling in the second innings which made the difference as England were bowled out for 195, thus giving Australia an easy target to chase.

Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood, and Mitchell Starc ripped through the English line-up and picked up three wickets each.

In response, the English bowlers were not nearly as effective against the Australian batsmen. Warner and Bancroft took the game away from England on the fourth day itself, leaving very little for themselves to do on the final day.

Stuart Broad bowled quite well on the final day's play but was unable to rattle the Aussie openers, who looked in great touch.

Steve Smith, who scored one of the greatest, and most important centuries of his career was named the man of the match. If it was not for his innings, Australia would have been staring at defeat.

The second Test will take place in Adelaide on December 2. It will the first day-night Ashes Test ever.
