3 early-season trades Cubs could make to bolster roster

The Chicago Cubs have enjoyed a strong start to the season. They find themselves second in the National League Central with a 25-19 record and sit only 1.5 games behind the Milwaukee Brewers for the division lead. Even though the team has had to overcome a number of notable injuries, they still find themselves in a prime position to reach the playoffs early in the year.

That being said, it would be unsurprising to see the Chicago Cubs make a few moves to better their current roster. The team's front office has been aggressive in recent seasons to return to the playoffs adding a number of key pieces via trade or free agency. Some of the notable additions in recent years include Dansby Swanson, Shota Imanaga, and Cody Bellinger.

Here's a closer look at three trades that the Chicago Cubs could make this season to bolster their roster

#1 - Yusei Kikuchi

It has been a disappointing start to the season for the Toronto Blue Jays, one that has led many to believe that the club could become sellers at the trade deadline. If the Blue Jays opt to move on from some of their veterans or expiring contracts, Yusei Kikuchi could be one of the most sought-after names on the block.

The 32-year-old is in the final year of his contract and could fetch the Blue Jays a decent prospect or two from the Cubs. Kikuchi would be an excellent addition to Chicago's rotation, which could use help on the back end. So far this season, Kikuchi has a 2.60 ERA with a 1.096 WHIP and 55 strikeouts.

#2 - Mason Miller

One of the most popular names mentioned in trade rumors has been Mason Miller of the Oakland Athletics. The 25-year-old has been one of the most electric bullpen arms in the MLB, taking the league by storm with his velocity. He also has several years of contract control ahead of him, which could make the asking price steep for Chicago. However, if they are willing to pay up, he would be massive for the team.

#3 - Jesus Luzardo

The Miami Marlins appear to be willing to move on from a number of players after moving Luis Arraez to the San Diego Padres earlier this season. If the team decides to follow this trend, Jesus Luzardo could be a name that draws interest from clubs across the league.

Much like Yusei Kikuchi, Luzardo would be an ideal addition to the Chicago Cubs' pitching rotation. However, unlike like Kikuchi, Luzardo remains arbitration-eligible for two more years, so he would not be considered a rental player for the club.
