Who is the longest serving manager in English football history?

Sir Alex Ferguson and Arsene Wenger are two of the longest serving managers in the Premier League.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger completed 18 years at Arsenal today. He was appointed on September 30, 1996 and officially took over on October 1.

In terms of longest serving managers in the Premier League, he is behind Sir Alex Ferguson’s record (21 seasons in the EPL, 27 overall with Manchester United).

But both managers come nowhere close to the record for the longest serving manager in English football history.

That is held by Fred Everiss who managed West Bromwich Albion for 46 seasons between 1902 and 1948. Even after he retired as manager, he stayed on as the club director before he passed away three years later.

The only other manager to serve for more than 40 seasons was George Ramsay, who managed Aston Villa during their most successful period in history, between 1884 and 1926, and retired at the age of 1971.

Sir Alex Ferguson doesn’t even make the top 10, coming in 11th in the list. Wenger, on the other hand, is way down in 39th position – tied with Brian Clough who also managed for 18 seasons.
