Last week on AEW Dynamite, Sting announced that he will retire next year. The 64-year-old, who joined All Elite Wrestling in December 2020, stated that he wanted to end his legendary career on his terms and said the AEW Revolution pay-per-view 2024 would be the stage where he would have his last match and hang up his boots.

On the recent edition of 1 Of A Kind podcast, WWE Hall of Famer Rob Van Dam talked about Sting's retirement promo on AEW Dynamite and said the Icon wanted to retire during his time in TNA, but the company kept convincing him to perform.

"The way that I remember, when we did the first Hall of Fame for TNA/Impact inducted Sting, he gave his speech, and he told everybody that he thought he was done, he was retired already. And Dixie Carter's husband called, 'Hey man, we've got this thing. We really need you.' And he was like 'No, I'm done.' 'Hey, it's just PPV. Once a month or something, once a week,' or whatever they had. 'I think I'm done.' 'But what about if we give you this much money?' 'Okay, I can do it for a little bit,'" Rob Van Dam said. RVD continued:

"That's what I remember from the speech that Sting gave when he got inducted into the Hall of Fame. That they kept saying 'Well, just another six months or another twelve months. We'll pay you this much.' He'd say 'Well, I guess I'll keep going.' That was back in 2009, or 2010 I guess. So that's why I didn't know if he already retired or not, but I know it's been on his mind for a while." [H/T Wrestling Inc]

Dave Meltzer reached out to Tony Khan about Sting's impending retirement in AEW

Speaking recently on McGuire on Wrestling, Dave Meltzer said he contacted the president of AEW to suggest that he should give Sting a retirement similar to that of the WWE Hall of Famer, The Great Muta.

"I don't remember if I sent, talked or emailed Tony Khan, but I definitely contacted Tony Khan after that final NOAH match that [Great] Muta wrestled and I go, 'This is your template.' Whenever it comes time for Sting, look for this for ideas because [Pro Wrestling] NOAH did such a phenomenal job," Dave Meltzer said. [H/T WrestlingINC]

The Great Muta (Keiji Muto) is a Japanese legend and has had a long and well-accomplished professional wrestling career. He retired earlier this year.
