9 WWE firsts that happened in 2019

A year of firsts.
A year of firsts.

2019 has been a historic year for WWE in more ways than one. Several significant moments took place in the past twelve months, with many of them never happening before. As WWE loves telling us, there were many firsts in 2019.

You may be aware of some of these history making moments, but there are some obscure facts that may have slipped your mind.

Several WWE Superstars made history and broke some records along the way. From championship wins to main event matches and a lot more in between, here are nine things that happened for the first time ever in WWE this year.

#9 First women's main event at WrestleMania

This was historic.
This was historic.

This is the most obvious first that WWE accomplished in 2019, one that will surely not be forgotten in the coming years and decades. Whether you enjoyed the match or not, Becky Lynch defeating Charlotte Flair and Ronda Rousey to win both the RAW and SmackDown Women's Championships was one hell of a WrestleMania moment.

With Rousey joining WWE, it was always going to be a possibility that WrestleMania 35 would be headlined by an all-female match, but for years prior nobody thought that it would actually happen.

Rousey and Charlotte were likely slotted for WrestleMania, but Becky's remarkable burst in momentum and fan support helped make this historic Triple Threat match an organic fit. Lynch's journey was particularly inspiring, coming from the Kickoff Show in 2018 to the WrestleMania main event in 2019.

The match itself was not bad, suffering slightly from a fatigued crowd and a controversial finish, but the significance of history wasn't lost on anyone. Whether or not another women's match ends up main eventing WrestleMania in the future, the WrestleMania 35 Triple Threat will still stand the test of time as one of the most historic moments in wrestling history.

#8 First women's match in Saudi Arabia

This could spark change.
This could spark change.

WrestleMania 35 was not the only significant history-making moment in 2019 for WWE's women. WWE attempted to get a match sanctioned at earlier Saudi shows, but to no avail. In 2019, that mission was accomplished. Crown Jewel saw the first-ever all-female wrestling match to take place in Saudi Arabia.

Natalya and Lacey Evans received the honor of bringing some hope of change in terms of how women are perceived in the country. One solitary wrestling match may seem like a small step, but it was really a giant leap in history.

#7 First female Triple Crown Champion

Bayley will always be the first.
Bayley will always be the first.

Sticking with the women, WWE was able to enforce a brand new way of becoming a Triple Crown Champion thanks to the introduction of the Women's Tag Team Championships. The achievement would include winning the RAW and SmackDown Women's Championships, as well as the Tag Titles.

At Money in the Bank this year, Bayley became the first female Triple Crown Champion after cashing in her briefcase on Charlotte Flair. She was one-half of the inaugural Women's Tag Team Champions and carried the Red Brand's belt into WrestleMania in 2017.

#6 First African-born WWE Champion

What a WrestleMania moment.
What a WrestleMania moment.

African-born wrestlers are a rarity, which is what makes Kofi Kingston's WWE Championship victory at WrestleMania 35 so special. The Ghanian-born Kofi Kingston made history when he won the WWE Championship at WrestleMania 35 and became the first African born Superstar to do so.

When The New Day member returned to Ghana earlier in the year with the title on his shoulders, Kofi's victory inspired an entire nation to dream big.

#5 First Superstar to cross 1000 cumulative days as Tag Team Champion

Tag team specialist.
Tag team specialist.

Back in 2018, Kofi Kingston broke the record for the highest number of cumulative days as a Tag Team Champion in WWE. His 953rd day with the Tag Titles helped him overtake Billy Gunn for this astonishing feat. Earlier this year, the former WWE Champion crossed the 1000-day mark, making him the first ever to do so.

Kofi held the titles with CM Punk, Evan Bourne, and R-Truth before his career soared to new heights alongside Big E and Xavier Woods. Whether or not you acknowledge him as a SmackDown Tag Team Champion when The New Day held the titles during his WWE Championship reign, Kofi still passed 1000 days during his current reign.

#4 First Superstar to win the WWE Championship twice on SmackDown

'The Beast'.
'The Beast'

Kofi Kingston's WWE Championship run came to a crashing halt on the Friday Night SmackDown premiere on FOX. Brock Lesnar, wrestling his first network TV match in 15 years, defeated Kofi in 9 seconds to pick up his fifth WWE Title. It was also the second time he did so on the Blue Brand.

Back in 2003, Lesnar defeated Kurt Angle on SmackDown in a spectacular 60-minute Iron Man match to capture the WWE Championship. Surprisingly, no other Superstar has won the title on SmackDown more than once, making 'The Beast' the first to do so.

#3 First Superstar to win the same world title at WrestleMania & SummerSlam in the same year

He did it twice.
He did it twice.

Brock Lesnar's win on SmackDown was not the first time he held gold in 2019. He was the Universal Champion heading into both WrestleMania and SummerSlam. On both occasions, he was challenged by Seth Rollins and on both occasions, Rollins won the title. The style of both victories was contrasting, but they were both satisfying.

Both victories were feel-good moments, likely the peak of both of Rollins' Universal title reigns. His victory in the main event of SummerSlam made him the only Superstar to win the same World Title at the two biggest events of the year. To top it all off, Rollins achieved this feat by beating the same man both times.

#2 First Superstar to win the Royal Rumble from number 10

Rollins started off the year hot.
Rollins started off the year hot.

Like Kofi Kingston, Seth Rollins achieved multiple firsts in 2019. With over 30 years of history in Royal Rumble matches, many entrant numbers have seen a victory. This year, number 10 joined the list and it was 'The Beastslayer' who got the job done, lasting over 40 minutes and becoming the Rumble's iron man this year.

It is always fascinating to see which numbers produce Royal Rumble winners. After first-time winners from 14, 25 and 10 over the past several years, we might see another new winning number or two. Look out for entrant number 11, 17, or 21 to go all the way in the either the men's or the women's Royal Rumble matches.

#1 First Superstar to enter 2 Royal Rumble matches in 1 night

Jax made Royal Rumble history.
Jax made Royal Rumble history.

While winning numbers are one thing, the people entering the match are a different issue. In the past, there have been a couple of women who entered the Royal Rumble match, but once the women's Royal Rumble match became a reality, it seemed like no female would ever enter the men's match again.

Beth Phoenix looked to bag the record of being the only person to enter both the men's and women's Royal Rumble matches, however, Nia Jax decided to make some history of her own. After entering the women's Rumble match at 29 and lasting until the final 3, Jax attacked men's entrant number 30, R-Truth, and entered the match herself.

While she shares the record of entering both Royal Rumbles with the current NXT commentator, Nia Jax did so in one incredible night. This makes the 'Irresistible Force' the first and only Superstar to enter two Rumble matches in one night and that is impressive.
