7 WWE Superstars who desperately need to win a title in 2022

While some championships in WWE are passed around a lot, we often forget that even some of the biggest superstars haven't had many or any title win in 2021.

In this case, even former world champions spent the full year without a title win, or only enjoyed a brief title reign in between. These seven superstars desperately need to win a championship in 2022:

#7. Drew McIntyre - Limited WWE Championship success in 2021

While Drew McIntyre entered 2021 as WWE Champion, his second reign with the title was cut short in February when The Miz cashed in the Money in the Bank briefcase. The A-Lister's reign itself lasted just eight days, and Bobby Lashley began his dominance of Monday Night RAW in March 2021.

While fans assumed that McIntyre would have his WrestleMania moment in front of the fans by beating Lashley, WWE made the tough but correct decision of having The All Mighty retain, as it allowed him to enjoy a respectful reign with the world championship.

Drew McIntyre has been important in 2021, but there came a point where he repeatedly challenged Bobby Lashley, with many fans believing that he was overstaying his welcome in the WWE title picture. His final defeat to Lashley at Hell in a Cell marked a temporary halt of his world title pursuits.

That was the best decision the company could have made as The Scottish Warrior would fail to capture the Money in the Bank briefcase and feuded with Jinder Mahal briefly. He was unsuccessful in his incredible WWE title match against Big E at Crown Jewel, and he jumped to SmackDown after that.

The approach taken with McIntyre on the blue brand so far has been clever. He has been actively involved in non-title feuds and has been kept apart from Roman Reigns deliberately.

Apart from Roman Reigns vs. Brock Lesnar, the biggest match WWE has for The Tribal Chief is one against Drew McIntyre. While it might seem unlikely for him to enter Universal title contendership by WrestleMania 38, Dave Meltzer of the WON suggested that there is a way McIntyre could face Reigns at WrestleMania:

"The key is a finish strong enough to where they can headline the biggest show of the year coming off the finish, or do something to add Drew McIntyre to the mix if he wins the Royal Rumble, if the idea is to give Mania a unique match rather than a third meeting,'' said Meltzer.

Drew McIntyre desperately needs to win a title in 2022. Whether it's the Universal Championship or the Intercontinental title, he will be a suitable champion regardless.

#6. Finn Balor - Doomed to follow the old WWE main roster cycle?

It's been nearly half a year since Finn Balor returned to the WWE main roster, and he's back in the same position before he returned to NXT in 2019. When Balor jumped from the main roster to NXT two years ago, he enjoyed another strong reign as the top champion - one where he didn't use The Demon persona once.

When asked why, he said that he felt like using the gimmick was a step back. However, when it comes to the main roster, marketability is everything, and the company wasted little time in making The Demon return for Extreme Rules 2021.

The Demon suffered his first loss on the main roster to Roman Reigns in what was a bizarre and underwhelming finish. On RAW, Finn Balor has had mixed results, but he seems to be in a position where WWE is using him as someone to elevate younger superstars.

Balor desperately needs to win a championship in 2022, otherwise his return to the main roster will follow the old cycle of him losing momentum.

#5. Kevin Owens - A reward for renewing his WWE contract?

Kevin Owens has found himself in the headlines recently after it was revealed that he signed a new contract with WWE. His original contract was set to expire on January 31st, 2022, and there was even a rumor that he was "expected" to leave the company.

Upon confirming the news of him signing a lucrative new contract, Owens said that he was thinking of his family. As of this writing, KO is a week away from potentially becoming a world champion at the Day 1 pay-per-view.

However, with Vince McMahon's promotion's plans for Big E as the next top superstar, it seems unlikely that a title win is in Kevin Owens' immediate future. There's no doubt that it's well deserved, especially since he has come short of winning both world titles despite challenging for them on numerous occasions in the last few years.

With the company teasing a Kevin Owens-Seth Rollins partnership, we could see them find tag team success on the red brand in 2022. If not the world title, then a United States or RAW Tag Team title win is overdue for him next year.

#4. Dana Brooke - Long overdue for a WWE Women's title win?

We're aware that Dana Brooke is the current WWE 24/7 Champion, but we're talking about serious titles and not one used as a comedic prop on television.

Brooke was criticized by Corey Graves on RAW, and those comments led to a divide in opinion among fans - one side of whom believe that she has worked long and hard enough for her first women's title win.

Dana Brooke is yet to experience women's championship success in WWE despite being on the main roster for nearly six years. She desperately needs to win a title, but the stacked women's roster makes it hard for it to be possible.

#3. Naomi

Naomi is another superstar who hasn't experienced championship success in a long time. 2017 was the last time she was the SmackDown Women's Champion, and despite competing on a few occasions for the title, she came up short.

Naomi is popular with the casual fanbase and many have pointed out the potential marketability she has. Not only this, but she has the talent and experience to compete with the top-tier women in WWE.

Hopefully, 2022 will be the year where she finally reclaims the SmackDown Women's Championship.

#2. Liv Morgan - Another superstar overdue for WWE Women's title success?

WWE Superstar Liv Morgan has had an unexpectedly good second half of the year in 2021. She was the sentimental favorite to win the Women's Money in the Bank ladder match, although she fell short to Nikki A.S.H., who cashed in a night later and enjoyed a measly one-month reign as the RAW Women's Champion.

Morgan emerged as a RAW Women's title contender before Survivor Series 2021, and she has risen in popularity since her feud with Becky Lynch. The match against The Man ended controversially, and she failed to capture the women's title.

However, the comparisons to the Trish Stratus-Lita match on the red brand over a decade-and-a-half earlier did justice, and the two women put on a classic. If anything, Liv Morgan's stock only rose from that defeat.

It will be interesting to see how the company handles Morgan in 2022. Nobody would be against the idea of her having a WrestleMania moment, but it may take longer for WWE to pull the trigger on her. Hopefully, it isn't too late by then.

#1. Seth Rollins - Hasn't been a champion in WWE since 2020

Seth Rollins hasn't had a single title win throughout 2021 in WWE. He has primarily been occupied with feuds against Cesaro and Edge, and never even got a Universal title shot against Roman Reigns.

While it may have been a good thing to avoid the Reigns-Rollins match, he instantly entered world title contention upon his RAW return. Seth Rollins may not become the top champion anytime soon, but 2022 should be the year where he enjoys one good title reign.

As mentioned before, the RAW Tag Team titles could be an option. There isn't any title on the red brand that Rollins hasn't won before (except the 24/7 title), and he is a grand slam champion.

With that said, he was one of the best superstars in 2021 and his feud against Edge can easily be considered the rivalry of the year in the company. It seems long overdue for The Architect to have won a title.

In early 2022, Seth Rollins could still be in world title contention. But will he be the one to take the title into WrestleMania 38 as the defending champion?
