WWE storylines are traditionally based on age-old tales of good versus evil. The good superstars (known as faces) usually get all the glory to send the crowd home happy. However, for a face to achieve the desired reaction, it is almost imperative that they come up against a good villain.

These antagonists are called heels. A heel will garner sympathy for their opponent, whether by mercilessly dominating them or sneakily undermining them.

A huge variety of heels have been portrayed over the history of the company. These range from cerebral manipulators, ultimate opportunists and trash talkers to dominant beasts. A few legends such as Roddy Piper and Jake "The Snake" Roberts played their roles to such perfection that the hatred fans felt for them often spilled into their personal lives. A few current superstars fall into the same category as these legends of the industry.

Here are five WWE Superstars who are natural heels.

#5: Randy Orton has been WWE's top villain for two decades

The majority of Randy Orton's 20-year career in the company has seen him play the villain. Whether ending legends' careers, leading a stable of privileged second generation stars or terrorizing the entire roster as the Apex predator, Orton has excelled in every role.

His heelish tactics, cocky appearance and devastating finishers make him a perfect villain. The Viper is so believable as an antagonist that most of his face runs quickly turn underwhelming. Fans just love to see the former World Champion go back to his villainous ways.

Randy Orton is one of those superstars we love to hate.

#4: WWE superstar Baron Corbin is a throwback heel who knows how to garner pure heat

Professional wrestling has seen a dramatic reduction in pure heels in the internet era. Unlike past eras, fans are privvy to backstage information about superstars, which makes it hard to separate characters from performers.

Baron Corbin is a rare breed of superstar who is able to garner pure negative reactions while playing villainous roles. If the current Happy Corbin should be placed in the main event, it's only a matter of time until he becomes the company's top heel.

#3: 12-time WWE Women's Champion Charlotte Flair's athletic gifts and family background make her easy to root against

WWE Smackdown Women's Champion Charlotte Flair is perhaps the best female wrestler on the planet. The former NXT Champion has won more women's titles than anyone else in the company.

She is also the daughter of record 16-time Men's World champion, Ric Flair. All these notches on her belt make Flair an unrelatable character to the average fan. This in turn, means that she is naturally set up to be better than everybody else, and she knows it.

The Queen's cocky demeanor and undeniable ability make her a natural heel.

#2: The Miz can talk any WWE crowd into booing him

No WWE Superstar plays the "cowardly heel" role better than The Miz. The Real World alum represents everything traditionally despised in the business. Loud and opportunistic, the Awesome One got into the company from reality television. This meant that fans and peers alike gave him a hard time because of his perceived lack of respect for the business.

Though Michael Mizanin has since paid his dues, The Miz retained the most annoying parts of that image, to great effect. Perhaps the biggest tool in the 9-time Intercontinental Champion's repertoire is his willingness to poke fun at himself.

Watching The Miz get a comeuppance after being thwarted in his underhanded endeavors is one of the most satisfying things a fan can experience.

#1: WWE got the best out of Roman Reigns after realising that he is a natural heel

For 6 years, Roman Reigns was one of the most polarizing superstars in WWE. Ever since Seth Rollins turned his back on him, The Big Dog was portrayed as a sympathetic Babyface. Time and again, fans rejected this version of his character, showering him with boos in almost every arena.

The 5-time World Champion's evil side was finally unleashed at SummerSlam 2020 when he attacked Bray Wyatt and Braun Strowman after a long absence. The attitude shift was the birth of the Tribal Chief, a gimmick which has included one of the greatest title reigns of all time. Quite simply, The Head Of the Table is in his element as a heel, and at the moment, he is nearly unstoppable.
