5 Potential challengers for Roman Reigns' WWE Universal Championship inside the Elimination Chamber

Will Roman Reigns be forced to defend his Championship inside The Elimination Chamber?
Will Roman Reigns be forced to defend his Championship inside The Elimination Chamber?

This past week on WWE Monday Night RAW, Shane McMahon made his return to the company. He was on the show to help Adam Pearce announce the first Elimination Chamber Match of the year.

Drew McIntyre will put his WWE Championship on the line inside the unforgiving steel structure against Sheamus, AJ Styles, Jeff Hardy, The Miz, and Randy Orton. This bout will probably escalate the tensions between McIntyre and Sheamus.

According to various reports, WWE is set to break a three-year tradition, as the company will not hold a Women's Elimination Chamber Match this year. One could argue that there aren't enough contenders in the tag team division to push for those titles to be defended, either.

WWE has typically presented two Elimination Chamber matches on the show of the same name. As a result, the most obvious choice this year would be for Roman Reigns to defend the WWE Universal Championship in the steel structure.

If Reigns is forced to defend his title at the second pay-per-view of the year, there are several current WWE stars who deserve to challenge him for the title.

#5. Former Universal Champion Kevin Owens could fight for the title at WWE Elimination Chamber

Kevin Owens came up short in his attempt to defeat Roman Reigns at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view, but he could be handed another chance.

The former champion collided with Reigns in a Last Man Standing Match. But after the botched finish, it could be argued that the referee cost Owens the match. The WWE official stopped the ten count because Reigns was stuck in a pair of handcuffs. For this reason, Owens has a logical reason to demand a rematch.

WWE doesn't seem prepared to push Reigns into a new feud at the moment. Owens attacked the champion last week on SmackDown, so it seems like this rivalry will continue.

It's also worth noting that Jey Uso wouldn't be able to interfere in the match this time around. Uso has cost Owens his matches with Reigns in the past, so it would make sense to remove that element at the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view.

Reigns has been inside the chamber before, so he'll have experience on his side. Regardless, Owens' inclusion in this match could make the contest even more exciting.

#4. Rey Mysterio could be added to the match at WWE Elimination Chamber

Rey Mysterio is a veteran in WWE, and though he has fallen short several times in recent matches against King Corbin, the former world champion could be handed a shot here based on his experience.

Mysterio and his son Dominik have been locked in a feud with King Corbin in the recent months. It would make sense if both men were added to the Elimination Chamber Match. WWE usually likes to have several storylines featured in the bout.

Edge is currently looking to have a run that takes him to a world championship victory at WrestleMania. Rey Mysterio could be hoping to have the same path this year, as the former champion might be wrapping up his wrestling career in the near future.

Mysterio didn't have the impact that he wanted inside the Royal Rumble Match, but the Elimination Chamber could be his chance to prove that he's still got it. With an impressive performance, he could show everyone that he deserves one last run at the top of the company.

#3. King Corbin would be an interesting choice for WWE SmackDown's Elimination Chamber Match

King Corbin has participated in several of WWE's biggest matches in recent years, It's obvious that he's a well-liked star backstage. The 2019 King of the Ring winner is destined to become world champion at some point in his career. Even though that doesn't look like it will happen anytime soon, Corbin could still be added to this match.

As already noted, Corbin's feud with Rey Mysterio could be one of the main focuses of this match so that the two men can continue their story. This bout could also allow Corbin to pick up a new feud on WWE programming heading into WrestleMania. Seth Rollins is set to make his return on WWE SmackDown this week, and he could continue his feud with Rey Mysterio and his son Dominik.

Corbin has proven that he knows how to steady the ship in major matches. He probably won't win the contest, but he could still benefit from a remarkable showing heading into The Showcase of the Immortals.

#2. Cesaro could be the dark horse inside WWE SmackDown's Elimination Chamber

Cesaro has been getting a push on WWE SmackDown, and the former tag team champion was able to decisively defeat Daniel Bryan. It seems like Cesaro is becoming a breakout star on the blue brand.

Cesaro and his fans have been looking for a way for the Swiss Superman to be pushed in the same way that Sheamus has been on Monday Night RAW. The WWE Elimination Chamber pay-per-view could finally be his chance.

Cesaro and Shinsuke Nakamura might be going their separate ways, so the Swiss Superman could enter the world championship picture heading into WrestleMania.

It's hard to argue that the former champion isn't a veteran who deserves the chance to shine in WWE. A shot at the Universal Championship this close to WrestleMania would definitely help Cesaro gain some prominence ahead of the event.

Bray Wyatt was the shock winner inside the Elimination Chamber in 2017. Likewise, there could be a shock winner inside the steel structure once again if Cesaro's recent WWE push continues.

#1. Seth Rollins could return to challenge for the Universal Championship at WWE Elimination Chamber

Seth Rollins is set to return to WWE SmackDown tonight after he competed in the Royal Rumble Match last month.

The battle royal marked the first time the former WWE Champion appeared on WWE programming since November. He entered the bout at number 29, but he was unable to recreate his winning performance from 2019.

It seems like Rollins will be returning to the company with his Messiah character because his heel persona was evident at the Royal Rumble pay-per-view. Rollins could finally be ready to turn his attention to his former friend Roman Reigns and the Universal Championshio. On the other hand, the Messiah might be looking to find some new disciples because Murphy turned on him.

Rollins' future will become clearer tonight on SmackDown because he should make his intentions clear. But leaving him out of the Elimination Chamber Match would definitely be a mistake on WWE's part. As a former world champion, he's a genuine threat to Reigns' run with the title.
