5 future opponents for Edge in WWE

The Rated-R Superstar, Edge, is currently embroiled in a deeply personal and visceral rivalry with best friend-turned nemesis, Randy Orton. These two are set to collide in a standard singles match at Backlash in what is being dubbed as "The Greatest Wrestling Match Ever." Orton and Edge previously battled in a hard-hitting Last Man Standing Match at WrestleMania, which saw Edge emerge victorious.

Even though Orton and Edge have told a riveting story, their match at Backlash should be the last of their current saga. There is a new breed of talent in WWE that deserve to be in the ring with veterans like Edge.

At the age of 46, Edge is in the best shape of his career and he can still put on a classic in the ring with anyone on the roster. Edge came out of retirement, wanting to finish his career on his terms which entails quite a few money-making dream encounters in the foreseeable future.

Here are 5 WWE Superstars Edge could face in the future.

#5 Drew McIntyre

The current WWE Champion Drew McIntyre has been on a tear lately. He has had a career-defining year in WWE so far, having won the Royal Rumble and defeating Brock Lesnar at WrestleMania to become the WWE Champion. McIntyre has been extremely dominant as champion, but he hasn't come across a skilled veteran like Edge.

Fans have always known Edge as a prizefighter. The Hall of Famer is an eleven-time World Champion, former IC and United States Champion. Not to forget, he revolutionized the tag-team division in the Attitude Era alongside Christian. Needless to say, The Rated-R Superstar has always had a liking for championship gold. He even retired as World Champion in April 2011.

It wouldn't come as a surprise if Edge targeted the WWE Championship upon dispatching Orton. Given that he is the Ultimate Opportunist, Edge could be waiting for the perfect moment to pursue McIntyre's coveted WWE Champion.

#4 Kevin Owens

Kevin Owens is in many ways similar to Edge. Both grew up in Canada, both are extremely talented in the ring and both can connect with the WWE Universe as villains and babyfaces. Let's not forget that both show a great degree of tenacity and grit. With their uncanny resemblance, they could tell a magnificent story in the ring.

Owens recently returned from a hiatus a few weeks ago. He is currently involved in a mid-card program with Angel Garza, but it's doubtful that it will last for long. Given that RAW lacks depth due to a fragile mid-card and a thin roster, Owens and Edge could add intrigue to a brand that is struggling to maintain fan interest.

Owens and Edge are two sides of the same coin; these two gladiators can tell an amazing story inside and outside the story. It has the beguiling touch of the student versus teacher program. An encounter like this is fitting of mega-stage like SummerSlam.

#3 Seth Rollins

Edge was a victim of Rollins' antics in the past, but has the Rated-R Superstar forgotten?

When Edge made a stunning comeback to the ring at Royal Rumble, this showdown probably came to your mind soon after. Seth Rollins is the 'Architect', Edge is the 'Ultimate Opportunist'. Even though Rollins prides himself on being "The Messiah", Edge is unlikely to fall for his devious tactics.

Edge was one of the best in-ring workers of his time and Rollins can have a good match with a broomstick. These two in-ring masters could bring the best out of each other. The Messiah has recently lost big matches to the likes of Kevin Owens and Drew McIntyre and he needs to redeem himself. A victory over Edge could bring him back to the summit of the mountain.

Let's not forget the history between these two and take a trip down the memory lane. Back in December 2014, Rollins threatened to Curb Stomp Edge onto his MITB briefcase if John Cena didn't reinstate The Authority. Cena gave in to Rollins' antics, but Rollins attempted to break Edge's neck before Cena thwarted him.

Rollins versus Edge could steal the show on any given night. It has the potential to be a five-star classic. This encounter ticks all the boxes for a perfect dream encounter and fans would love to witness it.

#2 Aleister Black

Aleister Black has been the most winningest Superstar of 2020. The Dutch Destroyer has only lost one match in 2020, and that was to AJ Styles in March due to outside interference. Black has taken out Buddy Murphy, Bobby Lashley, Austin Theory, Akira Tozawa, and Apollo Crews. Paul Heyman and Triple H are said to be huge supporters of the former NXT Champion, which is why he has been such a top priority.

Given that he has earned the favor of top WWE officials, it may just be a matter of time before he is finally thrust into the main-event scene. To establish himself as a top star, Black would have to score a statement victory over an established star. Edge could be the guy to do the honors for Black.

Edge has put over stars in the past; he was the one who put over Jeff Hardy and CM Punk in 2009. A win over Edge could serve as a stepping stone for Black, who is on the cusp of breaking through the glass ceiling.

#1 AJ Styles

Although Edge has primarily appeared on RAW upon return, it remains to be seen whether he will be used on SmackDown or not. If Edge is a free agent like John Cena is, a rivalry with AJ Styles over on SmackDown seems pragmatic and logical.

The Phenomenal One was the standard-bearer of TNA while Edge was the workhorse of WWE. These two in-ring masters were valuable assets to their respective companies. Fans could only dream of such blockbuster dream matches in the past, but the timing of Edge's return to action couldn't be more fitting. Styles is nearing the end of his career and Edge is looking to end his on his terms. Therefore, an encounter between the two athletes seems inevitable.

When Edge faced off with Styles at the Royal Rumble, the crowd was buzzing with anticipation. The face-off was short-lived as Edge soon eliminated Styles, who had injured his shoulder. If a few moments in the ring gave fans the chills, one could only wonder what a full-fledged match between them could be.
