A supposed promotional poster for the upcoming film The Iron Giant Reforged has been making its rounds online, sparking rumors of an alleged sequel. The rumors began on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, when a Facebook user, @YODA BBY ABY, shared a poster for the movie, claiming:

"THE IRON GIANT 2!!! Get ready for an unforgettable holiday adventure with The Iron Giant Reforged, hitting theaters this December 2024!"

The poster states that the film stars Vin Diesel (of the Fast and Furious franchise) and Noah Jupe (A Quite Place), and that the sequel is set for a December 2024 release. It adds:

"One year after their emotional goodbye, Hogarth, played by rising star Noah Jupe, is stunned when the Giant (voiced by Vin Diesel) makes a spectacular return. Brace yourself for an exhilarating journey filled with heart, humor, and high-stakes heroism as old friends reunite to face new dangers!"

However, the poster is fan-made, and there is no sequel coming out in December 2024.

The Iron Giant is a 1999 animated sci-fi film produced by Warner Bros. It is based on a novel of the same name by Ted Huges. It is set during the Cold War and revolves around a boy, Hogarth Hughes, who befriends a giant alien robot and tries to save the giant from the U.S. military trying to destroy it.

"I would have no idea where to go with a sequel" - Iron Giant creator about a possible next film

When the movie was first released, it was a commercial failure in part due to alleged mismanaged marketing by Warner Bros. However, the film has since received critical acclaim and become a cult classic. It holds 96% approval on Rotten Tomatoes and has won nine Annie Awards.

What added to the rumors was that the poster claimed Vin Diesel, who originally voiced the giant, was reprising his role. However, as the series creator repeatedly explains, there is no sequel on the cards.

Back in August 1999, when questioned about a possible sequel, director and co-writer Brad Bird told Animation World Magazine:

"I would have no idea where to go with a sequel. I don't think I'd be interested in doing it, myself."

He asserted this again in 2016 during the premiere of Anthony Giacchino's documentary The Giant's Dream: The Making of the Iron Giant. At the time, he told the audience that he would never talk about a sequel. Bird added:

"This is the story that was told," and there "isn't necessarily a story afterward."

He reiterated his conviction a third time in 2018 when a fan questioned him on X about why there was never a sequel. Bird replied:

Bird told Animation World Network in 2009:

"Some projects totally lend themselves to sequels and others don't."

Citing Godfather II and Star Wars as examples of films that needed a sequel, he added:

"I'm not a big fan of the Jaws II kind of sequel where you've done everything that you needed to do with the first one, then you're just going for the money. I hope that they wouldn't do a sequel unless they came up with a fantastic idea, and I hope that they would want to do it as well as we've done it, at the very least."

The Iron Giant is available to stream on HBO Max.
