The actress' upcoming project

Sofia Vergara is currently gearing up to play Griselda Blanco, a real-life Colombian drug lord, who was prominent in the cocaine-based drug trade and underworld. Blanco was born in Colombia and based in Miami in the 1970s and '80s. She was dubbed "the Godmother" and Billy Corben’s 2006 documentary Cocaine Cowboys and Cocaine Cowboys 2, which released in 2008, shed light on her life.

Catherine Zeta-Jones took on the role of Blanco in the 2018 Lifetime biopic Cocaine Godmother. Sofia Vergara spoke to Entertainment Tonight about the role and said Blanco was "a complex person." The actress mentioned:

"There are so many nuances to explore in terms of who she was as a drug lord and, of course, as a woman, as a mother."

She continued:

"She was someone who did whatever it took to protect her family. I wanted no one to think of my last role. I wanted to get inside her head and really understand her mentality."

Sofia Vergara explained that she changed her look to play Griselda to step away from her role as Gloria Delgado-Pritchett on Modern Family.

Griselda will also star Alberto Guerra, Christian Tappan, Martin Rodriguez, and Vanessa Ferlito. The series will also feature a special appearance by Colombian star Karol G, as per The New York Post.

The title is set to release on January 25, 2024.
