Reality TV show couple Julie and Todd Chrisley from Chrisley Knows Best are still in jail, having been convicted of bank fraud and tax evasion in 2022. However, on September 8, the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed that the duo's sentences had been reduced.

Todd is scheduled to be released on Jan 22, 2033, two years earlier than his original sentence, and Julie's sentence was reduced by 14 months. She is set to be released on October 19, 2028.

The reality TV stars emerged victorious on January 9 after Alex Little of the Nashville, Tennesse, law firm Burr and Forman, who is the family’s attorney, announced that they had won a $1 million settlement from the State of Georgia. He called this an "encouraging sign" and as per People, he said:

"We have been saying for months that the criminal case against the Chrisleys was highly unusual and had real problems. This settlement is an encouraging sign. It’s nearly unprecedented for one arm of the government to pay money to defendants when another arm is fighting to keep them in jail."

This came after the Chrisleys accused the former Director of Special Investigations of the state’s Department of Revenue Joshua Waites of misconduct for allegedly using his position to pursue "bogus tax evasion claims" in a 2019 lawsuit, as per USA Today.

According to People, the lawsuit described Waites' charges against the couple as:

"A shocking example of how an out-of-control public servant can abuse his office and violate the rights of innocent citizens for reasons that have more to do with securing publicity and money for his office than with enforcing the law."

Why are Julie and Todd Chrisley in prison?

Julie and Todd Chrisley were found guilty of allegedly committing tax evasion and reportedly defrauding community banks of more than $30 million in fraudulent loans in June 2022, as per Entertainment Weekly. Additionally, Julie Chrisley was convicted of obstruction of justice and wire fraud.

Todd Chrisley was sentenced to 12 years in prison, while Julie received a seven-year sentence in November 2022. The two also reportedly received an order of 16 months probation from U.S. District Judge Eleanor Ross in Atlanta, as per Deadline.

Todd Chrisley is currently at the Federal Prison Camp in Pensacola. Julie, originally slated to serve time at Federal Correctional Institute Marianna SCP in Jackson County, was moved to the Federal Medical Center in Lexington, Kentucky.

In November 2023, the couple brought forward an appeals case scheduled to be heard in April, on grounds that the government allegedly used illegally obtained evidence in the case against them, according to Business Insider.

The Chrisleys also allegedly accused Waites of reportedly pursuing an "increasingly aggressive relationship" with their daughter Lindsie Chrisley Campbell. The lawsuit reportedly claimed that he disclosed personal information about their taxes to their daughter and others and claimed the action to be "intentional, willful, and malicious with deliberate indifference to the Chrisleys' rights," as per Business Insider.
