The 2023 Primetime Emmys Creative Arts Awards will finally air on Monday, January 15, following a four-month delay. The three-hour-long ceremony, which honors the year’s best TV shows, is being held almost half a year after nominations were announced in July 2023.

Notably, the original award presentation was scheduled to take place in September 2023, but it was pushed back, owing to the Hollywood writer and actor strikes. The SAG-AFTRA strike, which has now ended, brought the entertainment industry to a standstill last year. Further, those participating in the protest were not attending promotional activities or appearing or accepting awards.

For those unaware, this was the first time the Emmys were postponed since 2001, when the 9/11 attacks occurred just five days prior to the planned ceremony.

Everything about Hollywood’s biggest strike that delayed the 2023 Primetime Emmys Creative Arts Awards

SAG-AFTRA originally initiated the strike on July 13, as actors and writers sought better benefit plans and compensation amid the rise of streaming services. They claimed that the complications from the streaming model have resulted in a decline in wages. Moreover, protection against the impact of artificial intelligence on their work also became a significant topic of discussion.

Following SAG-AFTRA’s official announcement of the strike, many prominent icons in Hollywood joined the protests, with some even donating to the organization’s Emergency Financial Assistance Program to help fellow industry professionals. Blake Lively, Jennifer Lopez, Ben Affleck, Julia Roberts, Ryan Reynolds, Meryl Streep, and Dwayne Johnson were some of the biggest stars who joined the cause.

Subsequently, the Writer Guild of America (WGA) strike, which first began on May 2, lasted for 140 days, before the union came to an agreement with Hollywood studios in September, ending the strike. Two months later, SAG-AFTRA reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) in November 2023.

The 118-day work stoppage, the longest in the union’s history, ended after the SAG-AFTRA unanimously backed the deal with Netflix, Walt Disney, and other companies. Valued at more than $1 billion, the three-year contract included a new bonus system paid by streaming services and an increase in minimum salaries.

The deal also provided protections against unauthorized use of images generated by artificial intelligence. In December 2023, the union officially approved the new contract with the AMPTP, making the tentative agreement a certain deal, thereby also ending the wait for the 2023 Primetime Emmys Creative Arts Awards.
