What is Castor Oil?

The castor oil plant, or Ricinus Communis, is primarily cultivated in Africa, Jamaica, India, China, South America, and Haiti due to their favorable tropical summer rainfall climates.

Castor oil (which is obtained by pressing black castor seeds) is primarily used in soaps, cosmetics, waxes, lubricants, pharmaceutical products, and cooking, and is exported from India. It is primarily sold and consumed in North America, China, and Europe.

What are the two types of castor oil?

Castor oil comes in two main varieties:

Castor oil can be either yellow (produced by pressing unroasted castor beans) or black (obtained by roasting the beans and then pressing for oil).

Due to the fact that the process for making black castor oil from roasted beans was pioneered in Jamaica, the oil is sometimes referred to by the Jamaican name.

Differences Between Yellow and Black Castor Oil

Castor seed oil is a popular health and wellness product, but there is so much information and so many brands on the market that it can be overwhelming to choose the best one. Let's begin with a brief comparison of regular castor oil and black castor oil.

The technique of extraction is of utmost importance. The color of regular castor oil ranges from a very light yellow to almost clear. Cold-pressed castor oil is extracted from castor seeds under high pressure, resulting in this pale-yellow form of oil that is lighter, cleaner, and thinner because it does not go through the roasting process.

However, bleach, coloring agents, deodorization, hexane, heptane, and other solvent extractions likely used to produce clear castor oil render it watery, odourless, and devoid of many of its natural benefits.

Black castor oil, on the other hand, is made by first roasting the castor seeds (which results in an ash dark color), then grinding and boiling the beans to extract the oil, leaving behind a rich amber color.

The ash content in this castor oil also makes it different from clear castor oil because it not only improves the oil's overall properties but also makes it more alkaline, which opens your hair cuticles and makes the oil more clarifying. To put it simply, not all castor oil is the same. A few more benefits of black castor oil are discussed below.

Benefits of Black Castor Oil

For hundreds, if not thousands, of years, people have turned to black castor oil as a natural remedy for a wide range of internal and external issues. Its unusual composition, including a high concentration of ricinoleic, linoleic, oleic, stearic, and linolenic fatty acids, makes it a valuable essential oil with many uses.

What sets this oil apart from others is the extraordinarily high concentration (at 90%) of ricinoleic acid, a potent monounsaturated fatty acid that allows the oil to transport the maximum amount of moisture, vitamins, proteins, and omega 3, 6, and 9 to the hair and skin.

1) Black Castor Oil for Hair

The most commonly known benefit of this oil is for hair growth. It is believed that it can stimulate hair growth naturally. Clinical research has shown that black castor oil for hair growth can prevent hair loss by inhibiting the production of the hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which is the subject of much praise for its purported ability to promote hair growth.

It's full of skin and hair-benefiting omega-3, 6, and 9 fatty acids. It's great for all hair types because increased blood flow to the scalp and roots encourages thicker eyebrows and eyelashes in addition to stronger, healthier hair strands on the scalp.

2) Relieves Menstrual Cramps

When applied to the skin's surface over the ovaries, this oil can alleviate the pain of menstruation. Use it a few days before your period is due to start for the best results. Use a heating pad on top of a cloth soaked in this oil for 20 minutes twice daily to increase blood flow and relieve pain. While there is no research to prove this, anecdotal evidence is present.

3) Benefits for Skin

This castor oil is a great natural remedy for cleansing and nourishing the skin, reducing acne, and healing scars due to its high concentration of vitamin E and its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties. Due to its moisturizing properties, it is also an effective anti-aging remedy.

In conclusion, black castor oil is said to stimulate hair growth and provide other benefits to hair, but this is only supported by anecdotal evidence and not scientifically validated clinical studies. Yet, it is considered one of the best home remedies for hair growth.

Always check with your physician before trying any new hair treatments, including castor oil. They should be able to detail any castor oil-related health concerns, such as interactions with other drugs or supplements, that you might have.
