US Team makes Solheim Cup history by taking 4-0 lead in foursomes in Spain

The US team dominated the field at the 2023 Solheim Cup on the first day. The team took a 4-0 lead against the European team on Friday at the Finca Cortesin in the Andalusia Golf Course in Spain.

Lexi Thompson registered a 2&1 victory while playing with Megan Khang against the European members Maja Stark and Linn Grant.

Khang and Thompson started their game with a victory on the first three holes after which finally Stark and Grant bounced back on the sixth hole. However, the American pair defeated them by 2&1.

In the second match, Danielle Kang and Andrea Lee paired up to go against Celine Boutier and Georgia Hall. Kang and Lee registered a victory by 1 up and added another point to their team.

In the third match, Nelly Korda and Allisen Corpuz won a match against Anna Nordqvist and Leona Maguire and finally, Ally Ewing and Cheyenne Knight won a match against Charley Hull and Emily Pedersen.

Team USA created history by scoring 4-0 in a foursome match for the first time at the Solheim Cup.

  • Winner: Korda and Corpuz by 1 up

Ally Ewing/ Cheyenne Knight vs. Charley Hull/Emily Pedersen

  • Winner: Ewing and Knight by 5&4

"Hopefully surprise a lot of people" - US Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis hints at a big surprise ahead of the tournament

American Solheim Cup captain Stacy Lewis spoke about the biennial tournament ahead of the start of the competition.

In a press conference, Lewis said that Europe had won the last two tournaments and this year the US team would be playing on European soil and hoping to surprise people.

She said (via ESPN):

"I think Europe's the favorite. They have won the last two, we're on their soil, they have a great team that has a ton, a ton of experience in this event. So you look at history, you know, it doesn't bode well for us. But I love our chances. I love these rookies. I think they're going to have a great week and hopefully surprise a lot of people."

The Friday foursomes match was completed with Team USA taking the lead. However, Team Europe has a chance to bounce back in Friday's fourball matches which are scheduled for the afternoon.
