Cameron Champ’s been having some mixed performances lately. The golfer, who had a T59 finish last weekend, had a decent outing in the Shriners Children’s Open the previous week. However, the 28-year-old’s third round in the competition didn’t go as planned. He finished T18 despite sharing the lead early on in the weekend.

Champ, whose last win came in 2021, credits his mentality issues for the lack of big results. A three-time Tour winner, the golfer noted that his mental fight was holding him back, not his swing. Champ even dubbed himself his “worst enemy” while explaining his mental condition. The golfer noted that he needed to work on his mindset to improve his game further.

Opening up on his game and the effects of his mentality, Cameron Champ said, as quoted by the PGA Tour:

“I was my worst enemy. I would just take it out on myself. Now I’m just trying to enjoy the positives and negatives. It’s hard out here. Just fight it out until the last hole.”

Cameron Champ further admitted that it took a heart-to-heart chat with his team to pull him out of a mental rut. He even opened up about working with a performance wellness coach set up by his agent to improve himself.

He added:

“I've had conversations with my wife, with my coach. I'm just like, if I don't enjoy it, why do it,” Champ said. “For me, I knew there had to be a change because I wasn't enjoying myself, didn't want to be out here, and again, I've loved the game forever. It's given me everything. So I know it's not that I don't love the game. It's just I'm taking it out on myself.
“I know what I'm capable of when I'm free-spirited… I've just been taking it easy on myself. This game is hard. Whenever you're struggling, if you can stay positive and just try to stick to what you're doing, no matter what, and that's all I was trying to do, just have a good tempo all day, and after that, it is what it is.”

Cameron Champ is ready for the 2024 season

It is pertinent to note that Cameron Champ is currently ranked 242nd in the OGWR. He finished a career-worst 144th in last year’s FedExCup and almost replicated the rank this year, finishing 127th. The golfer, who arrived on the PGA Tour with a bang by building on his standout collegiate career, is currently struggling.

Having had another forgettable season, Champ is now locked in for 2024. Notably, the golfer still has a lot of work left this season as he has to crack the top 125 by fall’s end. With big pressure off him, it’ll be interesting to see how the golfer performs for the rest of the year.
