It was the year which saw English clubs make big runs in European club competition.

Both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur overcame three-goal deficits in their semi-final ties to overcome Barcelona and Ajax respectively, to book only the second-ever all-English Champions League final - where Liverpool won their 6th title in the competition.

In the Europa League, Arsenal beat Valencia and Chelsea needed a penalty shootout to see out Eintracht Frankfurt in the semis. The two London clubs booked the second all-English European final of the season, where Chelsea triumphed.

The top-5 scoring clubs in European club football competition this year all belonged to the Premier League. On that note, let us meet the five clubs who scored the most goals/game in European club competition in 2019.

(Note: Only clubs to have played at least 10 games, excluding qualifiers, during the year are considered).

#5 Sevilla (22 goals in 10 games; 2.2 goals / game)

Sevilla's quest for four consecutive Europa League titles in as many appearances in the competitions came to an end following a 6-5 aggregate defeat to Slavia Praha in the Round of 16 in the 2018-19 edition of the competition.

Earlier in the season, the Andalusian club came through three rounds of qualifying to top their group, and beat Lazio 3-0 on aggregate in the Round of 32.

In 2019-20, Sevilla were the only team to win five games in the group-stage of the Europa League, with their lone European defeat of the season coming on Matchday 6 against Qarabag.

Among teams to have played over 10 European club competition games during the year, Sevilla's 70% win rate (7 wins out of 10) is equaled by only one other club, while their 6 clean sheets are only dwarfed by Chelsea and Barcelona (7 apiece).

#2 Tottenham Hotspur (29 goals in 13 games; 2.23 goals / game)

Tottenham Hotspur overcame fellow Premier League side Manchester City 5-4 on aggregate in the 2018-19 Champions League quarterfinals to book a semifinal date with 4 time winners Ajax.

Trailing 0-1 from the first leg, Spurs trailed by two further goals in the return leg before culminating their heroic fightback with a Lucas Moura goal 6 minutes into injury time in Amsterdam to break Dutch hearts.

In only the second-ever all-English Champions League final, Spurs went down to Liverpool.

Notwithstanding their heaviest ever home defeat, a 2-7 reverse against Bayern Munich in this season's Champions League, and another defeat at the home of the Bavarian giants, Spurs won 3 of their 4 other group-stage games to seal their passage to the knockout round of the competition.

Tottenham's tally of 29 European goals this year is bettered by only 4 other clubs - all of whom play in the English Premier League.

#3 Chelsea (35 goals in 15 games; 2.33 goals / game)

Following six consecutive wins in the knockout rounds of the 2018-19 Europa League, Chelsea were held to a pair of 1-1 draws by Eintracht Frankfurt before a penalty shootout win over the Bundesliga side booked an all-London Europa League final with Arsenal - which they won 4-1.

Chelsea lost in a penalty shootout to another Premier League side Liverpool in the UEFA Super Cup final in Baku, before losing their only European game of the season on Matchday 1 of the 2019-20 Champions League, against Valencia at home.

The Blues recovered from a 1-4 deficit against nine-man Ajax to salvage a thrilling 4-4 home draw before sealing progress to the Round of 16 with a 2-1 home win over Lille on Matchday 6 as Ajax fell to Valencia.

The London club's tally of 7 clean sheets in Europe in 2019 is equaled only by Barcelona, while their 10 European match wins during the year are the most by any club.

Having won all their 6 group-stage games in the 2018-19 Europa League, Salzburg overcame Club Brugge 5-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16 before losing 3-4 to Napoli in the Round of 16 to bow out of European contention for the season.

Salzburg started their 2019-20 European campaign with a bang, registering a 6-2 home win over Genk in their Champions League opener. Their Norwegian teenage striker Erling Braut Haaland became the third youngest player to score a hat-trick on competition debut.

With Haaland also scoring in the Austrian side's next 4 group-stage games, Salzburg needed a home win over defending champions Liverpool on Matchday 6 to advance to the knockout round. But it was not to be as the young Norwegian striker and his team failed to score for the first time in 10 European games during the year.

#1 Manchester City (30 goals in 10 games; 3 goals / game)

English champions Manchester City thumped Schalke 04 10-2 on aggregate in the Round of 16 of the 2018-19 Champions League before a late disallowed goal in the second leg condemned them to a 4-5 aggregate defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the quarterfinals.

City started the 2019-20 Champions League from where they left off the season before, scoring 10 goals in their first 3 group-stage games, before a pair of 1-1 draws confirmed them as group-winners with a game to spare. A 4-1 victory at Dinamo Zagreb on Matchday 6 ended City's European commitments for the year on a winning note.

With a 70% win-rate in Europe in 2019, a tally matched only by Sevilla, City are one of only 4 teams to score 30 or more goals in European club competition during the year - the others being Chelsea (35), Arsenal (32) and Liverpool (30).
