For many Manchester United fans, this summer’s transfer priority, other than keeping hold of David De Gea, should be finding a replacement for Michael Carrick. The former Spurs man has been instrumental again this season and the Reds have suffered badly when he’s been absent.

With Carrick 34 next year it is essential Louis van Gaal acts fast and finds someone who can protect the defence and hopefully bring some much-needed composure to the midfield. It seems the United management team have cast their eyes further afield to find the ideal man to succeed Carrick, according to the latest reports.

The Metro notes: Manchester United are reportedly on the brink of completing the transfer of Internacional’s Rodrigo Dourado. Louis van Gaal is believed to have sent scouts to Brazil who were impressed with what they saw from the young midfielder.

Dourado, 20, is being touted as a the Michael Carrick’s potential successor at Old Trafford, and United are closing in on a deal, according to reports. Van Gaal is keen to strengthen his midfield options for the future, and Dourado would be a good addition to the squad ahead of next season.

While it would be foolish to make any judgement on a player who the vast majority of us have probably never heard of before it is comforting to know that United seem to have finally realised you simply cannot ignore the importance Carrick has to the side and how vital it is we find a successor.

Some say Daley Blind can take over from Carrick, but he simply lacks the positional sense or the pace to get away with not reading the game as well when sat in front of the defence.
