Shane Warne interested in becoming next England coach?

Shane Warne

Shane Warne

He has been the English team’s tormentor-in-chief for ages. He has taken 195 Ashes wickets at an average of 23.26, including 11 hauls of five wickets in an innings. He has been a vocal ‘Pom-basher’. As it turns out, he could also become the next coach of the English cricket team.

That’s right. Shane Warne took to social media platform Twitter earlier in the day to reveal that he “will think about” taking up coaching duties with the England team.

Warne, who has recently taken up a part-time role helping Australia’s slow bowlers prepare for the upcoming World T20 in Bangladesh, came back to Twitter to clarify where his priorities lie.

Warne has impressed a lot of people with his stint for the Rajasthan Royals in the IPL as a player-cum-coach. The legendary spinner mentored a lot of young players in the team and even managed to lead the franchise to the IPL title in the inaugural edition of the tournament in 2008.

The England coaching role remains vacant after Andy Flower was sacked by the ECB following a disastrous Ashes tour to Australia in which the visitors were handed a 5-0 drubbing. Former England off spinner Ashley Giles, one of the front runners to take over from Flower, then presided over the ODI and T20 series in which England managed a solitary win and 8 losses in 9 games.

Gary Kirsten is also reportedly a contender for the England job but the former South African opener has a coaching role with the Delhi Daredevils in the IPL and is also a part-time batting consultant for the South African cricket team. It is also believed that the ECB will have to hand a happily settled Kirsten a contract which will make him richer by a million dollars a year if he agrees to take over the reigns from Flower.

Another Australian whose name has been doing the rounds for the role is former all-rounder Tom Moody.
