Gujarat Titans (GT) beat Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by six wickets in the 70th match of IPL 2023 on Sunday, May 21, at the M.Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. RCB have been eliminated from the tournament, while Mumbai Indians advanced to the playoffs after sealing the fourth spot in the points table.

After being asked to bat first, RCB managed to reach a daunting total of 197/5 in 20 overs. Virat Kohli rose to the occasion in the must-win game and shepherded his side with an astonishing century (101*).

Faf du Plessis (28), Michael Bracewell (26), and Anuj Rawat (23) chipped in with mini contributions to support Kohli. Noor Ahmad scalped two wickets, while Shami, Rashid, and Dayal scalped a wicket apiece for GT.

In response, GT failed to get off to a brisk start as RCB opening bowlers kept things tight. The pressure eventually got to Wriddhiman Saha as he perished, trying to score quickly against Mohammed Siraj in the third over. Shubman Gill and Vijay Shankar (35) then took control of the proceedings and constructed a brilliant 123-run partnership for the second wicket.

Gill started watchfully but found his range during the finishing stages of the powerplay. He continued in the same vein of form after six overs and smashed the bowlers all over the park to keep the required rate under check.

Gujarat Titans lost a couple of wickets in the final overs as RCB tried hard to keep themselves afloat. Shubman Gill poured water on their hopes and finished the game in style with a six off the first ball of the 20th over. He also completed an immaculate century (104*) in the process.

GT captain Hardik Pandya reflected on the win after the match, saying:

"The calmness the boys had inside was terrific. As I said, we wanted to keep the momentum going and we ticked a lot of boxes. [Gill] Shubman knows that when he plays those kinds of shots, he's a different batter. Today, the way he was hitting it, the bowlers feel like they don't have a chance. Even the batters at the other end get confidence from that."

He added:

"It was a special innings from Virat as well but I feel like we didn't bowl at our best. [Playoffs twice in two years] I can't ask anything better from the boys. Last year, everything went our way. We were expecting people to challenge us this year and the character the team has shown has been terrific."
