Glenn Maxwell's century helps Hampshire smash records against Lancashire

Glenn Maxwell in action for Hampshire

Glenn Maxwell’s 146 propelled Hampshire to an emphatic win, as they beat Lancashire at Old Trafford in the Royal London One-Day Cup, England’s 50-over domestic competition, by a margin of 148 runs.

Hampshire captain James Adams won the toss and had no hesitation in choosing to bat. Hampshire’s overseas recruit Maxwell, who has had a poor run in the Natwest T20 Blast, strode to the crease at No.3 after the fall of an early wicket in the form of James Vince.

The Australian shared a massive 179-run partnership with Will Smith for the 3rd wicket before Maxwell was finally dismissed for 146 off 96 balls with 22 boundaries and 2 sixes in his innings. Sean Ervine, Hampshire all-rounder, played a nice cameo towards the end of the innings, as he made 64 from 46 balls and helped Hampshire reach a mammoth 360/9 in the allotted 50 overs.

To be fair, Lancashire were severely handicapped as they lost premium bowler Kabir Ali to a shoulder injury after he had bowled just three overs, forcing the captain to resort to the medium-pace of part-time bowler, Karl Brown.

Lancashire, having lost their previous game in the competition to their arch-rivals Yorkshire, never really looked like having a chance of reaching the mammoth target at any stage of their run chase. Paul Horton, the Lancashire captain, was the only batsman to make a meaningful contribution and gave some respectability to their innings, as he made 57 off 50 balls before being clean-bowled by the left-arm spin of Liam Dawson.

The Hampshire bowlers rounded-off a brilliant team effort by bowling Lancashire out for 212, with all the five bowlers employed by the skipper taking a couple of wickets each.
