The Singapore National Olympic Council (SNOC) Vice-President, Annabel Pennefather, has been appointed as a member of the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) Ethics Commission.
An independent judicial body established by the IAAF Congress, the commission has several powers, one of which, is the authority to appoint an independent investigating officer to check violations of its code of conduct.
Also a lawyer by profession, who has substantial experience in sports and law governance, Pennefather has worked as the Chief de Mission for Singapore at the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games as well as the SEA Games. She is also the current Deputy President of the International Hockey Federation’s Judicial Commission, and a Member of the Olympic Council of Asia’s Sports for All Committee.

The appointment, that was confirmed by the IAAF President and the IAAF Council on 14 December 2015, comes as the global athletics body faces scrutiny after Russia was alleged for widespread doping, and was consequently barred from world athletics last November.
Apart from the SNOC VP, Justice Catherine O’Regan, a former judge of the Constitutional Court of South Africa has also been appointed to the commission. She has been an ad-hoc judge in the Supreme Court of Namibia since 2010 and has also served in the United Nations between 2008-2012 in the International Justice Council.
In her distinguished career, she also had the honour of being the Chairperson of the Commission of Inquiry into allegations of inefficiency in the South African Police Service from 2012 to 2014, stationed in Western Cape, South Africa.
Both these announcements were made available on the IAAF Ethics Commission's website on January 6, with these new entrants taking the total strength of the of Ethics Commission members to nine.
